I'm baking a b-day cake for my mom, which I've never done on my own before, and I'm wondering, after I bake the cake, frost it, and add all the decorations, can it be put in a cake pan (or giant plastic cake display-thingy), sealed, and left for about 24 hours? I didn't know if it would need refriderated (spelling?) or if it would be ok sitting for a day.
please help, thanks.

It will be fine left on the counter. Just cover it to keep it moist.
Here's a tip for a first time cake-baker like yourself. Wait until the cake is completely cooled off before your frost it. If you are in a hurry, you can put it in the refrigerator to cool it off (but after it is frosted, you can leave it out).

yes, you can leave it for that time period. If you use butter in the frosting, if you don't have air conditioning, put it in a cool place or even the frig. If using margarine or shortening, you can let it set out in container until it's gone, about 3-4 days. I do this ALL THE TIME! I don't have air conditioning so I use margarine that's 100% vegtable oil for the best taste. By the way, as a mom, what a sweet idea! Hope she loves the cake, but more important, she will love the thought!

You should be absolutely fine unless your icing is made of something like cream cheese........I'm thinking based on your description that maybe you used an already made frosting.
I think you will be just fine :)
Can I just say that I think it is a very very sweet idea that you are baking a cake for your mom for her birthday! I don't know your age, or your mom's age- but I can tell you mom's ALWAYS loves the incredible thought behind these things!!! Congratulations on being a great daughter :) I know your mom will love the cake!

Yes the frosting acts as a preservative
NOT allowing the cake to dry out
that's why they frost in the first place.

Alton Brown ROCKS. I have been given his baking cookbook final year and now I understand why brown sugar makes issues chewier and what egg whites will do in a recipe. Now that i'm getting why baking powder and baking soda are diverse, it provides me license to play around with recipes and positively get the needed result. purchase this e book. It provides the HOW and the WHY.

ok, since it's your first time make sure you wait till the cake is cool to put on the frosting, just in case you didn't know. and the cake should be refrigerated overnight. it'll taste better cool anyway!

you're probably better leaving out room temp in a cake dome unless it's really humid where you are. if you refrigerate it, the frosting will get all crusty and the run when you defrost it.

It really depends on the frosting. If it's a cream cheese frosting...then it has to be refrigerated.
