The alcohol content does vary from wine to wine but the alcohol content comes from the natural sugars in the wine. This makes me believe that the candy you are eating is enhancing the alcoholic effects. It will also change the level of sweet that you taste when you drink the wines. Generally, the straight alcohol doesn't have a taste so no, the bitterness is not the alcohol that you are tasting.

Surprise!!!!! highest content is in the cheapest brands. It amazes me how people talk about 77 or 69 bottles of (place name brand label here.....) wine and nesciently spend so much $ on that crap when the most relaxing effects are offered in the cheapest brands at jewels. the highest i've seen was 22% at jewels and it was no more than $8

I wouldn't necessarily say wine, I would say grape. Depending on the ripeness of the grape ie sugar content going through fermentation, some grapes can produce high levels of alcohol. Some of the grapes are: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, & Mature old vine Garnaches (to name a few).

port, some sherry, and madeira are fortified, so they will be higher than wines that aren't. (fortified wine has neutral brandy added). out of wines that are regularly fermented you will definitely see drastic differences. some california Zinfandels will be around 18%. I even had a California Chardonnay that was near that. german riesling will be around 8% generally
