tons of air conditioning is one of those units that was defined historically and persists to this day. A ton of cooling is defined as the amount of energy needed to freeze one ton of water (2000 lbs) over a 24 hour period. (12,000 BTU/hr)

If you are an industrial contractor, would you rather remember "24 ton unit", or "288,000 BTU unit"?

It's kind of like logarithms... It's easier to notate 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, than 10, 100, 1000, 10000, 100000.
