Ohio saw that the lower fines were not deterring people from abusing the law so they upped the fine to $250 to $500 several years ago.
As a disabled person, there have been times I have had to walk from the back of the lot, only to watch able-bodied people go to a handcap spot and leave as I struggle with my cane or crutches to get in the store. It's amazing how their eyes dart around as they observe others who can barely walk, having to come from the back of the lot and all because they used someone else's placard or plate to take a spot they were not entitled to.
Another thing that irks me. A person who parks in a disabled spot and sits in the vehicle while the disabled person goes into the store..... duhhhhh Park somewhere else if you aren't going in, too, and watch for the person to come out, then drive up and pick them up. How unfair and crazy is that? My husband never parks in a disabled spot and sits in the van when I go in ~ that is just plain rude and uncaring of others who could use the spot.
Several years ago I saw two teenage girls coming out of K-Mart as they stopped near the door when they were getting ready to leave. I had pulled in next to their vehicle and they saw me still there so they waited......so when I saw them acting suspiciously, I stayed in my car to see what they were up to.
They eventually walked over to the car next to me and got in but boy did they act weird as they got a glare from me. I acted like I was writing down their license number so hopefully they would think before doing that again.
But I doubt they did. They could care less that they inconvenienced others.

I'm not eligable for handicapped parking but I see others who do this all the time. I think it is not the stiffer penalty that is the problem, it is the lack of enforcement. A meter maid could have a heyday visiting nothing but parking lots at malls, banks grocery stores, etc. Also would increase the coffers of the local PD and maybe save people having to pay so much in taxes.

I think any able-bodied pig that illegally parks in a handicapped spot (or borrows a family member's tag because they are too lazy to walk) should be requires to spend one month in a wheelchair. They are not allowed to walk at all, even for work. Then maybe they would understand the difference between being handicapped and being lazy. After that, make them spend one month doing community service for the handicapped. And a fine of $1000.

personal story, my father in law had polio as a child, he was left permanantly handicapped by it, one year for christmas, me my husband and my father in law went to do some christmas shopping, when we arrived at the department store, all of the handicapped spaces were taken, three of the five cars were not marked as handicapped, we had to park all the way across the parking lot, covered in ice, it took him 20 minutes to walk safely to get into the store, ever since when I see a non handicapped car parked there illegally I remember that night my father in law had to walk 20 minutes on an ice covered parking lot in the snow, and freezing cold, I say it should be a stiffer sentence.

Yes there should be stiffer penalties. But it would also be nice if there could be closer parking spaces for people who R close but not quite there -handicapped.

I know a woman who was missing 2 fingers and Maryland issued her a handicapped parking space... all she needed was a form filled out by her doctor to be approved ! They really need to look a little closer at who is getting these and how they are using them !!

Ticketed and towed are the best options. I'm in a wheelchair myself. I have seen many idiot drivers park in such way that takes up 2 of the disabled parking spaces, or even in the non-disabled parking, same thing there.

Yup. Everyone who's caught illegally parking in a Handicapped spot- should be REQUIRED to use a wheelchair wherever they drive to for 6 months- to see what it's LIKE to be disabled & HAVE TO use those parking spots. (it'd be interesting to see how QUICKLY- THEY start complaining about non-handicapped people taking up those parking places!!! :) ).

The $200,00 in my state seems stiff enough for a first offence. Like any othe crime, repeat offenders should suffer stiffer penalties with each offence. If fining doen't seem to work, maybe a little jail time would help them see the signs.

If you had a broken leg and parked in disabled parking, and you didn't have the park and display, don't you think your entitled to park there?
