Any good tattooist will tell you that it can be any size you want.
The most popular size is about 3-4 inches around.
Do some good homework, this is something that you really have to be careful about........check albums, and carefully
make your choice.
good luck

well first off...if you want a portrait then I would make sure you shop around for a tattoo artist as you want someone who is very good to do it. ask to see some portraits they have done in the past. this will give you an idea of size and detail, but those who do good portraits can probably do great detail on something thats fairly small, but you wouldnt want to go too small either, cuz usually a portrait is meant to be seen. I would say at least get it 3 inches by 3 inches if not bigger.

The smaller the tattoo, the less detail you can get. There are artists, however, that specialize in miniature work. This is not the norm - besides, you want it large enough for people to see and appreciate.
A word of caution, while looking through portfolios, it is great to see work done that looks good, but can the artist completely capture the real essence of the person? Always see a photo that the portrait was done from or observe how well they do celebrities that you can recognize.

Portraits are about being realistic.
Some will depend on your artist ability.
Some on selection of placement.
Size of area, limits size of tattoo.
If you are a tiny person, you have
less area to work with.
Larger person, larger canvas.
Head shot, 1/4 to 2/3 the actual size.
It will still fit on the shoulder cap, if it's 3x4or4x6
Your artist can help you with the placement.

My artist says he won't do them smaller than 4 by 6. And yes, make sure you find someone who is really good at portraits.
