Yeah I remember a religious assembly at school where we were told that it was actually 616. I can't remember why, but this has much more significance to the Jewish culture and makes more sense from a contextual point of view.

It can also be interpreted as 616. However, 666 as Satan has always been misinterpreted... 666 means man, earthly man, and earthly desires, nothing more, nothing less.
That's all Satan is anyways, the darkest side of earthly desires, not a demon with a pitchfork and horns sitting in eternal hellfire and brimstone. The world is becoming more enlightened to this fact, I hope it happens sooner rather than later.
Yes, I'm a Christian, and a devoted one at that.

Shoot me, Just freaking shoot me! Do you really believe there is a mark of the beast? 666 or 616 0r 1-800-IM AN IDIOT. You people really get me laughing and it's humor us to watch you fight among yourselves about something so freaking trivial as this stupid question. There was an elderly person that lived next door to me growing up that her phone # ended in 0666 and some people refused to let children walk in front of her house. Come to find out that when she died she had donated all her money to the children's home for foster care. She was a foster child. I will never understand the Jesus freaks of the world. Sorry, just my opinion.

I think it's the number 7, not 777; that's just a repetition thing. 666 ain't cool. I'm attracted to the numer seven and it reminds me of green o_o strangely and some picture of a field that rightfully belonged to me each time I say it ._.

666 is correct meaning Man trying to be like God. It also refers to a mark of Satan and the Antichrist whom will cause all to receive in order to buy or sell. This mark is now known as a micro computer chip that can be monitured by satile and can hold data of personal history of everyone who receves it but now they are putting this device in pets and animals and the FDA has already approved this chip safe for humans but those who do will not have the right to enter heaven and those who don't shall be jailed and sentenced. Go to trumpetmin.org click could this be the mark?

Hebrew uses the letters of their alphabet for numbers.
The 6 is written as the letter Vav, a vertical stroke.
It has a little tick on the top like the Arabic number 1 or 7.
Anyway, it was intended to be a symbol for the Emporer.

I have heard that 666 stood for the Roman emperor Nero.In those days if you wanted to talk bad about your government you couldn't just come out and say it like you can today. Also didn't Nero hate Christians?

I'm not really sure but I think the King James Version and/or Latin mentions something else. Only the New International Version refers to it as 666.

Some interpretations have it as 665 or 616. Though, really it is all nonsense. People in those days would give special meaning to various numbers for whatever purpose. Some still do it today, though there is really nothing to back up the symbolism.
