He was out yesterday for a few beers but it turned into a late one! When you came home he was very drunk and twisted everything I said! Anyway we bickered a little and he got a little nasty with me and grabbed me by the lapels of my shirt, pulling me close and squeezing (I have a bruise just under my jaw today). He's never been like this before but I was so shocked I was actually shaking, he was horrible, I cdn't look at him this evening when I came home from work (he didn't go to work today!) he's been upstairs in bed all evening, maybe he feels bad about what he done, maybe not. Don't know what to do now, what would you do?

this is a really serious problem. its not okay that he did that to you. if you feel very comfortable with him normally, then try talking to him about it before you take action. just try to bring it up casually, try not to get it a huge fight over it. make sure he knows that he hurt you, otherwise he'll try to downplay it.

You know something must of triggered his behavior. You have been together for 17 years, and this spontaneous action popped up out of the blue. I would recommend that yo wait another day, and let him cool down. Try to calmly talk to him about what took place, and possibly what provoked his brutal action. Saying or doing nothing is not a good idea. You need to get to the bottom of what caused him to do what he did. 17 years is a long time to throw away, without at least finding out what happened.. After you speak to him about what took place, then you should determine what to do. He really shook you up because you were not accustomed to be manhandled by him. If this type of behavior continues, you might think about leaving, especially for your own safety. I really hope that this is an isolated incident for you, and that it never happens again. I would keep on my toes though, and be very observant of his drinking habits. I wish I could help you more. Good Luck.

Leave, now. Pack a suitcase with enough clothes for a week or so and go somewhere safe -- a trusted friend's or relative's house, a local YWCA, or a homeless or battered women's shelter. Contact the police (not 911, unless you're in immediate danger -- find a non-emergency number) and find out how to get help and/or a restraining order. Follow the instructions they give you. Arrange a time to come get the rest of your things -- try to come by when he's not home. Find another place to live or stay, and be glad you're rid of him. Good luck!

if you've never seen this behaviour before in the last 17 years, i'm thinking he may have not been only drinking but doing drugs (possibly cocaine) as well.
i've personally seen someone act out like that but only when he was on coke.
as some of the others have said, if it happens once, it could happen again.
it's up to you whether you want to stick around to find out.

He might not rememeber what he did so you better remind him and let him know that you are not having it. I would not let the incident just slide by just because this was the first time.

He couldn't control his drinking and behavior. He wouldn't be given a chance to do it again if it were me.

It can only get worse. Kick him to the curb while you still can!
