Hello all- I am moving in a few months and am agonizing over whether or not I should take my dog with me. I currently live in a house with a nice backyard and my dog is used to being able to go in and out as much as she wants. When I move I will be living in a one bedroom apartment. I will probably be gone up to 10 hours straight each day. I am just wondering if this will stress my dog out since she is used to being outside. My family has offered to let her live with them until I can either find a house to rent or buy a home. She loves my brother and sister and I know they would take care of her but I'll miss her a lot! Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I'd leave her with the fam. She'll get lonely ten hours a day alone.

I live in a one bedroom with my husband and two beagles. The size of your place doesn't concern me, it's the fact that you'll be away up to 10 hours per day at a time.

You love your dog and can definitely make it work, but you will need to take care of her needs. So, find a good dog walker to take her out for nice long walks while you are away. (Can / Do you want to afford that?)

You might also want to invest in some Kong toys to entertain her and keep her mentally challenged.

It all depends on whether you can live without your dog and what is in her best interest. I would have a hard time leaving my dog, but if your brother and sister can take good care of her, maybe that's the best way to go. Weigh your options.

I'm not concerned about the size of the flat, as long as you can take the extra care to go parks and other areas to walk her, since you'll have no yard. But 10 hours is a very long time to be home alone on a regular basis. Maybe it's best if you leave her with your family until your days will be shorter.

As an alternative, look for a roommate in a similar situation with whom you can co-rent a place. That way, you can help eachother out with the dogs, and they'll have less alone-time.

The issue would be, can you be patient with the dog as she goes through adjusting to the different routine? Be prepared for potty training on a more strict schedule since you will be away for long periods.

Always have toys in the house, bones and things that will occupy and make her happy. Spend tones of time with her when you are home and if she shows signs that she isnt doing well (some dogs will literally destroy the house, or themselves when anxiety kicks in) then take her to your parents.

I would definately give it a try but be open to the idea if it doesnt work, that she has a great home to go to.

Please leave her with your family, you can always visit her. Dont make the mistake of letting her live in such conditions. Dogs require exercise. Please! My friend did the same thing youre planning to do. Whenever I look at his dog, I cannot bear to watch. He can hardly breathe, and is o fat that he almost never moves. He is to die soon, and nothing can be done. You dont want to see your dog go the same way!

Hope I helped your decision!!

Yes, you should as long as she is pottey trained.... and that sounds good as long as the building person says its okay. I would take her with you. But you could always give her to your bro and sis if you really want to.
