I do not know the circumstances of your situation such as where your dog was, etc. But it seems that you are catching a lot of heat and not many answers to your question.

Should your dog be spayed? Sure, unless you are a breeder and even then you need to be very careful.

Should the mongrel's owner be held responsible to some degree? Absolutely.

Can you demand half of the costs paid by the mongrel's owner? You will need to check the laws of your state. Even then, be prepared for the owner to refuse to take any responsibility and you could wind up in small claims court. Are you prepared to incur court costs for filing a suit?

Just something to think about...

You can report the dog and owner to your local animal shelter. There are leash laws and the owner can be cited for having an animal at large. The dog can also be picked up. This may seem to be action after the fact, but it would help keep it from happening again.

One last thing...Years ago I had a pedigreed German shepherd that I bred a couple of times. Once when she was in heat a neighbor's dog (they let the dog run the streets) get to her and she got pregnant.

Now, here's the kicker...my dog was NOT at large, she was contained in my backyard, FENCED in. The male dog climbed the fence to get to her.

So the moral here is that things happen and even when you take necessary precautions, other irresponsible people can still cause problems.

Why would you even think that the owner of the roaming dog would possibly be responsible for half of the bill? Your dog is your responsibility, and if it got pregnant it's not the other owner's fault. If the dog got into your yard, perhaps you need a better fence. No need to destroy the pups, just give them away when they are weened.

I just wouldn't bother about apportioning the blame, I'd just worry about getting the dog spayed asap - this can be done when she's been mated recently, as you probably know.

You can look up the laws for your area, but whether or not you can actually get any money out of the owner is another thing entirely - I doubt any dog owner would pay up for this, especially if they were allowing their uncastrated dog to roam in the first place - you'd spend more money taking them to court than it would cost to abort the pups!

I don't recommend the abortion injection either - not pleasant.

It doesn't matter what kind of dogs are involved here - having an unspayed ***** makes roaming dogs a lot harder to control.

You should keep her away from any dogs, especially knowing that she's irresistible to them.

How would you know who owns the "mongrel" who impregnated your dog? I'd say the fault is on both the owners.

Absolutely not. I am assuming the female is yours. She should have been spayed, and certainly not in heat and out somewhere unsupervised where the "roaming mongrel" could have access to her and mate. Regardless, both dogs need to be fixed.

NO its not the other dog owners fault ! if your dog is in season then keep it on a lead and if another dog comes near then take your dog away from the situation...if theres one thing that annoys me then that has got to be it ! i have a male and when people bring there dogs in the park that are in season he will try and mate so then i have to keep him on a lead ! if you dont want your dog to have puppys then dont take it where there are other dogs !!

sorry.....it is all yours! You should get your female spayed, she will live a happier and longer life (without her hormones going crazy) !!!! Just because she is "pedigree" does not mean you have to breed her ..... breeding is a lot of work and responsibility!! If she is early in her pregnancy you may be able to get her spayed so you won't have the puppies. I hope you get it all worked out - for her best !

Dude ok, so a rover knocked up your *****. But where were you when the deed is done? You left your dog unsecured too. Its not like the dog broke into your home and had sex with your dog and sneaked out before you got home. If so the litter is polly going to be worth alot of money. People love smart dogs.

No, the owner of a roaming dog is not responsible for getting your dog pregnant. If your dog was spayed you wouldnt have this problem...and if you wanted to breed her with another purebred than you should have kept a better and closer eye on her.
