Where online (or offline) can I find obituaries? I found some at the local newspaper website but they don't go back far, only to 1997.

The major site is Legacy.com. They've contracted with a majority of American newspapers to archive their obituaries. You have to pay for it, but it's only about $3/obit.

The other site is the public library in the town where the obituary was published or the state archives for that state. For the local newspapers, you can usually get a volunteer from Rootsweb/USGenWeb to pull it for you and mail it on to you.

For that you'll have to go to your local library and go through issues before 1997. Some newspapers are more than 150 years old, so they've been running obits for a long time. Libraries, nevertheless, have the old newspapers on file.

Obits are a great source of info, assuming they did have one. However.. an alternative is the mortuary itself (depending on when the death happened).
An example, by the way.. I know that the obits from a Dallas paper are available, but only to registered users. A lot depends on the specific place.
