Recently my mechanic changed out my air intake control valve because my rpms were fluctuating between 400 and 1300 during idle and causing me to stall out because it was running so low. So everything was fine for a couple days but after about a week, the rpms are still fluctuating enough to jerk my truck while I'm in idle but its not stalling it. He told me that I should bring it in so he can reset the computer and that i need to drive 20 minutes in stop and go traffic plus 20 minutes on the highway to train it to my type of driving habits and than wait for the engine to cool and do it once more. Does this sound credible? I am going to end up trying it anyways but I just want some other peoples inquires of my situation.

I drive a 2003 dodge ram 1500 quadcab.

Not very, modern computer controlled vehicles have an operating program called "adaptive strategy", the idea being as the car ages the processor would learn to compensate for worn components and sensors. Some newer vehicles are so good at this that they actually mask problems with the car to the point that the driver won't notice them. Sometimes it is necessary to reset the memory in the processor during repairs and an IAC is one of those repairs but I would think after a couple of days it would have adapted to the new part. But considering you have nothing to lose trying this, just don't let him charge you, you can do this at home by unhooking the battery for 10 minutes or so, if this doesn't fix the problem go back and complain, apparently your vehicle was miss-diagnosed. If it still doesn't work it sounds like you might have an EGR problem.

It takes my Ford truck up to 90 minutes to get itself back to normal. Yes, your mechanic is right.
