i think you typically want to buy shellfish in the "R" months... so avoid may, june, july, and august.

Local health agencies shut down the clam flats on the East Coast occasionally during the summer if the bacteria count gets high. If you buy from a reputable market, the clams should be good whenever you buy them.

I heard that also. Clams and mussels and lobster, etc. are best during months with letter "R". However, I'm sure that with strict quality controls these days, they are safe to eat all year round. In the hottest months, you probably won't see too many in the fish stores and supermarkets.

you buy them in months with r i think the other months are supposed to be poison
