A man's cerebral cortex doesn't fully develop until the age of 25, and it is what's in charge of maturity and decision-making. So men aren't fully mature until the age of 25, and women at around 19. Not to mention all the people who joined for financial reasons. Is the argument valid?

How else are you to find volunteers? Only the very young or very desperate would willingly place themselves at the mercy of the Bush Adminisration for peanuts. Is this fair? No it is not and neither is life. A draft or compulsory service would be more equitable along societal lines, but there is no political will for such actions.

Well the fact that each person develops at a different rate based on life experiences, parental upbringing, socialization, etc., would result in people reaching psychological maturity at different times. There are some very mature 18 year old young adults out there. I know of some that act more mature than some of the 30+ year old adults I know. I can also tell you no "newbie" in the military is getting rich, in fact many get into financial problems after they enlist. And I have yet to see someone be forced to join and/or reenlist. I have on the other hand seen several dozen forced out of the military. So, yes this argument is valid.

Your opinions about cerebral cortex development sound stupid. Granted. kids today seem to mature slower today than they did even a generation ago, but they still know what they are doing, even if the reasons they are doing it may or may not be thought through fully. As for economic levels, yes, the military does seem to draw the lower levels, but that is the fault of the parents, not the Army. Too many are given a free college education by their parents, and not enough are taught that their parents can afford to send them to college because they live in the best country in the world. If more people were brought up with a love for their country and a sense of responsibility, the military would have to beat people to get them to leave.

Yeah, atleast if we get sent to war, its under our own free will, having joined under our own free will. As far as your age argument, the vast majority of any military is aged 17-25, so without this age group, I'd say a volunteer army would be impossible. Also, the draft lottery is based off birth date, the age group that is primarily drafted is 19 year olds, so that'd still void your 25 and up theory. As far as your financial theroy, anyone who enlists in the military just to make 1400 bucks a month as a private as a solution to their financial problems, well you get the point.

By your standards, if a 22 year old murders someone, then we cant blame him for his poor decision making. His cerebral cortex just wasn't fully developed. Give me a break. The people who join the military know they are not joining the Mickey Mouse club. The military has one purpose: to kill people to protect the interests of the United States. Don't diminish their sacrifice with this blather.

Yes, no one makes an individual sign on that dotted line, regardless of why we choose to join it is our choice. You say a man is not matured until 25, there are plenty of 18-24 year old men in the military today and they are very mature, strong and a great asset to the US Military.

The last time someone was drafted was I believe in 1976 so yes it is valid. You made the decision to write what you did and men and women make their own decisions to join the military.

Nobody forces you to join. Thus it's a voluntary action. Whether benevolent in nature or out of desperation, the decision to join is exactly that: a decision.

It's not a difficult concept to understand.

Yes. They only need to follow orders and make the other poor dumb ^$%(!@# die for his country. Once they are 25 we make them a SSG to train the next batch of hard charging life takers.

SSG US Army 73-82

So should 18 y/o's who get financial aid so they can go to college not have to repay that loan when they graduate 'cause they got the loan to better their financial status but weren't old enough to understand what a loan is?
