I think you should break it to him VERY gently, and VERY slowly. While he might very well be hurt by what you tell him, I think he would appreciate your honesty.

As the old say goes, "The truth hurts!" But it is best to tell him how you feel now rather than prolong it. Once he gets over it he will be grateful and appreciative especially if it leads him to someone that will share the mutual feelings, and unless he's completely oblivious I'm sure must already senses it unless your leading him on, in which case you shouldn't be to spare him. Just tell him so both of you can be free to really experience the joys of love!

Be honest with him, but whatever you do don't do that "I hope we can still be friends" speech, yeah it is the truth, but for a guy who just got his heart ripped out it can sting, he'll come around in his own time.

You can't. You WILL hurt his feelings. But you have to be honest with him, so just tell him and get it over with.
