Okay so I saw a RedBull comercial today.
A short floppy eared hound walks by a great dane.
Little hearts shoot out of their eyes.

But the short dog [the male] surveys the Dane and realizes...it wont work out...so he grabs a redbull and tada...wings.
[later shows little dane/hound puppy]

My question is, through artificial ensemination could a chiwawa and newfoundland [or any small/big combo] have babys?

I guess I dont understand how one species of animal can be so diverse, yet still...erm...mix

Reeling up some memories from good ole Bio class...I recall the definition of species to be a group of animals that can produce offspring with the abillity to reproduce.

And when I think of species I think of like Homo sapiens where you dont differ that much.
And then like plants with different strains...

but like.
All dogs are the same species?

Look at how diverse the human race is......yet we can all still "mix".

Keep in mind, just because it CAN be done, doesn't mean these ridiculous breed mixes should be done. It leaves the door open for, as well as creating, many new genetic and health problems.

Yes, all dogs are the same species. Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora Family: Canidae Species: Canis lupus familiaris

Yes, but it should be the smaller breed be the male, and the larger breed be the female. In example, say you want to mix a yorkie and a border collie. The yorkie should be the male, and through artificial insemination the border collie would most likely get pregnant and give birth to a live litter. However, if you AI'd border collie to a yorkie female, the puppies would be too big and the yorkie would more than likely die during labor. Hope this answers your question! :-)

Why are there tall humans and short humans and humans with brown hair and red hair and blond hair and black hair and blue eyes and green eyes and brown eyes and grey eyes and dark skin and light skin and various hues of skin, yet we're all the same species?

It's the same sort of thing. Dog breeds have just been more selectively bred to accentuate specific traits in their genes and make them mroe likely to be expressed when they're bred to a dog of the same breed.

That's why the "designer breeds" are so ludicrous - there's no way to predict which parent the dog will take more after, and no way to predict with any degree of certainty what the dog will look like.

*Could* they have babies? Probably, depending on which dog was the mother - if you impregnate a chihuahua with newfie pups, you will likely kill the mother when she tries to give birth to them.

it is possible for any dog to be "mixed with any other" however, the size becomes problem when the female is the small one! She will be unable to deliver and could possible kill her.....Some big dogs have been known to lay down for a smaller size male......

Just not a good idea!!! I am a Dane Snob!!!!They are perfect the way they are!!!!

Its better if the male is the smaller dog, that way when the female is having the babies,it wont hurt when its coming out.

They will find a way naturally as well as artificially. However, it really should not be done. You open up a lot of health risks, and you will have a litter of puppies that will need homes.

Yes it can work but the larger dog should be female, and I think the girl dog in the commercial was a Dalmation.

Not only can you breed different dogs but dogs to wolves. I wonder if dog/coyote would work? Hmmm.....

I've seen naturally conceived rott/chihuahua pups. They can find ways. NOT a good idea, but it can be done.

its possible, but not reccommended. your mixed puppies will mostly have birth defects due to the variation of the breeds. in short, its possible, but dont risk it.
