No one knows the exact criteria for TC as Yahoo won't say. (They don't want people gaming for it, as they do everything else on this site.)
You "contributed" a lot -- answers, best answers, who knows -- over the previous 4 weeks or so.
It's recalculated every week -- changes over Monday morning, California time.
That's all I know (I've had categories come and go and am now sporting my first Ettiquitte badge, go figure).
That's all anyone knows, as Yahoo staff ain't saying.

I'm wondering the same question. "How does one become a top contributor when they aren't the person that has the most best answers?" And, the most best answers person of Polls &Surveys, who also has the most in the whole Yahoo! Answers, he doesn't even have a top contributor badge!

I think it's a combination of amount of activity in a particular section and % of best answers in that same section. I had a top contributor tag until recently when my best answer % dropped below 10%.

I think Yahoo decides who gets to be a top contributor.
