Seems that way. That question was the reason for the seperation of the Eastern Orthodox church and the Catholic Church, although they both use symbols now.

No, churches are not sinning by placing images of Jesus or crucifixes in their church. These items are not used for idolatery or for worship of another God.Their purpose is to aid people in worship and prayer to God .This means the goal and the end result is people worshiping and honoring God, how could that be sinful? If their purpose were to hinder or to take people away from that, they would be sinful.

That is the BIG debate between protestant and Catholic churches.
THere are NUMEROUS articles on this.
Catholics believe that the graven images referenced worship to the images (idols) and use them as pictoral reference.
Protestants say "graven means graven" and Catholics are breaking the commandments.
Search around for graven images. You'll find 10 gillion pages on the argument.

Yes, this does violate that commandment. But the Catholic church is guilty of breaking many of God's Laws.
My Christian church has neither idols nor crosses, because it believes that would be a violation of the 2nd Commandment.

uh YES!!!
Praise God for your insight into seeing that this is against God's commands!
Exodus 20:4-6 tells us that God commands that
“YOU SHALL NOT MAKE UNTO YOU ANY GRAVEN IMAGE, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me, and keep My commandments.”
----
The Roman Catholics teachings are full of lies and blasphemies wrapped up in a bow of Christianity. Mainstream Christianity has embraced a lot of the Mother Church's ideologies into their churches as well . . . shame on them both.
But the truth shall set everyone free!
*Below is a great website for this subject as well as others.
May God continue to keep You and Bless You!

No,because Jesus is not now nor has He ever been God. He is the SON of God. He isn't God,Lord or any of the mistaken titles given to him by evangelical Christianity.John 8:28-"I do nothing on my own,but I speak these things as the Father instructed me" There are many similar verses thruout John. Jesus was not God,he was sent by God. He said so. End of story.

Yes and No- depends how you interpret it
some believe that it means to not call other images God, like my Y!A avatar
Some believe it means to make no image of God or other holy figure
The actual writing says do not make an image of anything in the heavens or under the sea, so that would include fish- that's why i think its a metaphor

That is why if you ever walk in a bible teaching, bible believing church you wont find crucifixes with images of Christ still dying and bleeding on the cross because He has ascended and he is no longer on the cross!

I don't know any Christians that worship statues of Jesus, myself..
If they did, then yeah, they'd be sinning there. But from what I've experienced they treat them as any other objects that remind them of the person they do worship, so it's not quite an accurate comparison.

Sinning... not realy... more like Christ Idol worship.
I know and when was the last time you saw a Christian wearing the 10 Commandments around their neck or displayed on their dashboard?
