Spelled Mecca or Makkah. It is a city in Saudi Arabia where the holiest shrine of Islam is located called Al Kabah. The Kabah was built by prophet Abraham peace be upon him. Islam is the continuation of the monolithic religion since Adam and Eva. Many prophets are respected in the religion - Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Jesus, Solomon, Mohamad, etc (over 110K prophets sent to every nation / society). Prophet Mohamed is the last one before the day of judgment. Muslims pray 5 times a day facing the direction of the Kabah in Mecca. Muslims are asked to perform pilgrimage at least once in their life - going to Mecca to perform the pilgrimage called Hajj.
Remember Islam belief - Jesus is NOT son of God, God has no son and any associate. Jesus was a phophet and well respected one. Islam belief - Jesus was NOT crucified - God saved him from the torture - They thought they were crucifying him, but God (ALLAH) already saved him.

The importance of Mecca started before Islam. From the days that Abraham left his wife and infant son Ishmael in Mecca, and the well of Zamzam that started flowing there.
The city is revered by Muslims for containing the holiest site of Islam, the Masjid al-Haram, and a pilgrimage that involves an extended visit to the city is required of all able-bodied Muslims who can afford to go at least once in an individual's lifetime.
The term 'Mecca' has come into common usage metaphorically to mean any all-important site for any particular group of people, or a main attraction in a certain place or group of people that has a large turnout. In the 1980s the government of Saudi Arabia changed the official English transliteration of the city's name from 'Mecca', as it had been and continues to be commonly spelled by westerners, to 'Makkah'.

Makkah is the holiest palce in islam. It is the place that Abraham built the Kaba. The building of the Kaba is in the Bible also. There is also in Makkah the two mountains that Hajar was running between with Ishmael to look for water, and the spring of Zam Zam that gushed forth as a bounty from Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad was born in Makkah, and he purified the Kaba, and removed the idols that the arabs were worshiping before he recieved revelation. The Prophet Muhammad never worshiped these idols.

Great Question
Mecca is a sacred place that goes back to the old days of Prophet Abraham "Ibrahim" peace be upon him. With direct orders from Allah (swt), Abraham, with the help of his eldest son Ishmael, built the house of Allah "baytu allah." The house of Allah "baytu allah" is nothing but a worship place, and in it there is the black structure "Ka’bah". Allah (swt) has ordered us in the holly Quran to direct our prayers toward Mecca or "ka’bah." Muslims worldwide direct their hearts and bodies toward Mecca or "Ka’bah" - to be precise - when performing prayers.

Makkah al-Mukarramah is a city in Saudi Arabia. Within this city is the great Mosque (Masjid al-Haram,) and within this mosque is the Kabba (a cube like structure.) It is in this direction where we Muslims pray.
