My one year old cat Mauli has been acting sickly lately (about 2 days.) Her voice is kind of raspy and she seems to be having a difficult time swallowing. Mauli is an inside cat only.
I did get a kitten about a month ago who is now roughly 2.5 months old, but she doesn't seem ill at all.
Is there any possible explanation for this that does NOT involve me taking her to the vet? Are these symptoms of something serious?

Yes it can be something very serious. It could be a sinus infection that can only get better with antibiotics. Take her to the vet, ASAP. If you dont it will get worse and your cat may die. Please take her.

Actually no, there is no explanation for this that doesn't involve taking her to vet. The reason for this is that no one, including a vet, can know what this is without examining the animal.

Difficulty swallowing is not good. Could be an upper respiratory problem, which could be anything to do with the mouth or throat. This is about the best anyone can tell you over the internet. The fact that the kitten isn't ill doesn't mean anything - just that the older cat doesn't have a contagious illness - or that the kitten isn't showing signs yet!

If you're worried about a pet, it's very important that you go to a vet for some PROPER advice. Please do not ever rely on whatever people churn out on here - this just isn't the place to go for medical advice.

It could be that your new kitten had a respiratory illness. Did you get it from a shelter? Was is an outside cat? If the kitten was a shelter cat it prolly had a first round of shots to keep it from getting really sick.

I'd take both cats to the vet for an annual exam.

its very hard to diagnose an animal with out looking at it. you best bet is to at least call the vet and ask to talk to the doctor describe the symptoms and he/she will tell you what to do from there. and more likely than not lead to a vet appt. better safe than sorry.
