My cat has been having diarrhea for a few days and this afternoon he went in my closet instead of his cat box, and when I was cleaning it up I noticed that there was some blood in it.
So what could be the cause of the blood in his stools?
He has an appointment with the Vet tomorrow
Since I brought him home almost a year ago he has had this on and off.
but I just want to know what could make him have blood in his stools!
What kind of tests should I ask the Vet to do and about how much do they cost?

You don't need to ask the vet to do tests, they will know what tests to do! They're the ones that tell YOU. As for costs, this varies wildly from vet to vet and area to area, so just ask your vet for the cost before they're carried out.

There are a few causes of blood in the diarrhoea - that's what vets do tests for, to find the cause. They might do blood tests, but they're more likely to do a faecal test - so if you can take a sample along with you, that would help. It could be a small or large intestinal problem, depending on what sort of blood is there - fresh or digested. Could be caused by something she ate, or a virus, or a bacterial infection. Numerous possibilities!

Don't get all horrified if the vet does or doesn't do things you don't expect. Just ask them to explain their choices or diagnosis/treatment - sometimes it's possible to treat these things symptomatically, i.e WITHOUT doing tests to find the cause - this is a route sometimes attempted if people don't have much money for instance.

Just trust the vet, and be sure to ask them any and all questions you have, so you understand what they're doing and why.

EDIT: Please DON'T accept the answers on here that say things like 'i think your cat has this' or 'it must be this problem' - people on here don't know! They're not vets, and even if they were they can't tell without examining the animal! What people have been through with their own pets are fairly irrelevant to what your cat may be going through.

I think it may have to do with your food. I had my cat on wet and dry cat food, and then we had that pet food recall and I took him off the wet food. Since then we haven't had any diarrhea episodes with him. I've seen blood in stool before, and it could be from the diarrhea. It probably burns his little bottom and causes it to bleed. I would try to get some of the stool and have them test it. I'm truly thinking it could be a food problem. Labs could run you anywhere from 50-100 bucks, but if you love this little guy like I do mine, it's well worth it to make sure he's ok!! I'll keep you and your kitty in my thoughts tomorrow!

there is no telling what the cost is, but ask for a test to determine an infection. tell the vet about the symptoms, and they should know right away whats happening.

Ask the vet to see if the cat has internal bleeding. It probably has internal bleeding. It could also have hemorrhoids, if cats can get those.

I'm going through this same thing with my cat. It took a long time to find out what is wrong with her. Turns out she's diabetic. Be sure they check for that. Good luck!!
