These cats reeeeally need to see a vet.

All cats and dogs require regular worming and flea prevention, whether or not there are children present. The cats probably do have tapeworms, since these are spread by fleas - many animals that have fleas also have tapeworm.

You can buy appropriate flea and worm treatment over the counter from your vet - don't be bothering with the rubbish treatment they sell in shops.

Treat both cats for fleas AND worms - REGULARLY. Don't stop once the fleas and worms are gone, they will come back! You will also need to fleaspray her house, fleas are hard to get rid of. You need to talk to a vet for some proper advice.

I want to check, does your sister know about vaccination and neutering for cats? This is also very important basic cat care.

The tapeworms that the cat probably has do indeed spread to humans. Can your sister not take the cat to the vet? He would give them some worming medication. It has to be administered orally (a liquid he squirts in the cat's mouth), and then 2 weeks later, again, to kill the newly-hatched worms, and that usually does it. He also can give her something to bathe the cat with fleas that will get rid of them, too.

If these cats go outdoors, though, they will eventually pick up fleas and worms again sooner or later. That is why you keep worming medication around the house, and every six months or so, you give them a dose of it. Especially if you have children in the same environment.

If she doesn't want to go to the vet or can't afford to, she is going to have to spend a little money to get rid of the problem. I suggest you go online to www.drsfostersmith.com. These guys are a couple of veterinarians in Wisconsin who have a mail order business of good products. Once you are at their website, scroll to the very bottom, under "Customer Service", click on "live help". You can chat with a vet about the fleas and the worms, and what the best thing available over the counter for these problems. Of course, they are going to try and sell you their products, but their products are good. They carry everything you find at the pet supply store and they have their own brand as well. You may want to buy from them, or get their advice and then run to Petco. But at least it is someone you can talk with.

There are lots of preparations available over the counter. Some work better than others. When it comes to fleas, some products help repel them, but won't get rid of them once the animal has them. So you need to get the right stuff. And also, once your cat has fleas and has been inside with them, he may well have spread them to the environment. You need to speak with someone about that problem, too. There are furniture sprays available as well.

Once your sister gets rid of the fleas and the worms, she should be sure to worm her cats every 6 months or so, and keep them medicated against fleas as well. These pests are harder to get rid of than to keep away.

Good luck

The tapeworms that cats get are not contagious to humans. Humans do get tapeworms, but they are not the same thing. The easiest thing (not the best, but the easiest and cheapest) is to buy "Revolution" from a Vet or a catalog for pets. Make sure you buy the one for CATS! Revolution will take care of the earmites and the worms. Of course the right advice is to get the cats to a vet, should have been done before her baby was ever born!

Take them to the vet. It could kill them and getting rid of them won't help. The vet will get you medicine that you will have to give the cat the medicine religously because worms are difficult to be rid of. As for the fleas. there are flea shampoos out there. They work and are not expensive at all.

Well, I'm preaching the Fossil Shell Diatomaceous Earth remedy, once again. It gets rid of fleas, ticks and parasites. It is very cheap and worked on my cats for fleas and worms. Have your sister look it up on the Internet.

~ Well if she doesn't want to give them up so they can get the right kind of care that they need
Then she or you must take them to the Vet asap so they can get better before it is too late to treat them.
Also if she does not get them treated or give them to the humane society then she can be charged for not giving them the proper care.
And taking them to the Vet is much cheaper than paying that ticket and or going to jail and then what would she do with her little one, and if she goes to jail then who would watch her baby? and if there was no one to take in her child then she would be taken away by social services.
But she can avoid that if she or some one else takes the cats to the Vet or humane society!

She needs to take both cats to her vet. Both problems (worms & flees) can be cured. She needs to take better care of her pets or find someone who can.
