I think that's wonderful that you are thinking about your guests. It is perfectly acceptable to register at Target or Walmart. I would choose Target over Walmart. Target has a classier selection with a lot of inexpensive options but at the same time a lot better than what Walmart has to offer. There is something for every price range at Target so that would be a great choice.
Another idea is a place like Bed, Bath, and Beyond or Linens N Things. They have items for your household and outdoors too and are not too expensive.

I did both target and bed, bath and beyond. The key is to register for gifts in different price ranges, from cheap to expensive, so people have a choice on how much or little to spend.

My daughter got married last month and was registered at both Target and WalMart. She received some beautiful, useful gifts and a lot of gift cards for both stores. There is nothing tacky about either store!! They knew that a lot of people attending didn't have a lot of money to spend at some of the "high-end stores". I think registering at these stores was a great decision on her part.

I would suggest Macys and Target.
Macys is great for the more high-end stuff...like pots and pans, maybe your dishes, etc. They offer GREAT stuff like a free tote bag for the bride, discounts on registry items that you don't get after the wedding, and a pretty lenient return policy after the wedding...there are a few other things that I don't remember.
Target is great for all of the other goodies! It's cost-friendly and I always find GREAT things in there...they have really cute registry cards...
Don't forget to put things on your registry like picture frames and cheaper items for those that can't really afford the bigger ticket stuff...
Good luck and congrats! :)

Target can be somewhat difficult in the way of returns (if you get two of something there, for instance). My advice to you is to register at two to three places. Bed Bath and Beyond was my favorite place to register BY FAR- they have everything, and they have a lot of reasonable prices. You could also do a department store (Macy's was the department store where I registered) and maybe an on line site like Amazon (for your tech savvy friends and family :) ). The best way to have a more reasonable registry is to monitor what YOU register for. Pick gifts in every price range, a few expensive ones, too, in case a few of your family or friends want to get together and get you something big (I registered for a Kitchen Aid Mixer, even though I thought it was WAAAY too expensive, but a few people got together and bought it for my husband and me). Register for little things (we registered for a potato masher and oven mits, and even dish towels) so people have lots of choices, or can buy a few things and make a gift basket to help their dollars stretch.
Hope this helps!

My girls found out with Target that returning anything is a pain in the rear. BB and Beyond was wonderful to work with. Dillards, Penneys, good also.

target is actually pretty popular for wedding registries, i'll be using them for my wedding too. i've never known anybody that has registered at wal-mart, but i wouldn't have my registry there. sure, they are much cheaper than other stores, but as a shopper, every single time i walk into a wal-mart it's a miserable experience. it's a huge hassle because there are SO many people there, and i wouldn't want my guests to have to fight the crowd in order to find something on my registry. you'd be better off just sticking with target, they have items that fit just about any income.

target & wal-mart are ok.. but really they only have the lower end of the scale, what if someone wants to buy you china.. or a lovely vase.. you can register at more than one place... or bed bath & beyond has a very wide range (kitchen gadets under $10 and china and bedding around $100) and they have stores everywhere as well as a on line registry.. you dont have to get fancy.. but ultimatly these will be your gift's, so make sure you register for things you want not things you think people will want to get you.

Target is a great place because they're everywhere and not too expensive. You can get nicer stuff than say, Wal-Mart, for a little more money. Just register at one place to keep it simple unless there's a specialty store for something specific.
