She started as my stylist, but now we are friends. She suggested I come to her house for my haircut so she wont have to split the cost with the salon. So I am assuming that she will charge me less than I would pay at the salon but where she can still make more than she would after the salon takes their cut. We are going to have dinner together that night too. Anyway, since it is on more friendly and less professional terms I wasn't sure if I should still tip.

This has nothing to do with whether she is a friend or not; nor whether she is doing your hair at home or in a shop. But I was raised to believe that one does not tip the proprietor of a service industry. The owner will always charge what they want/need and doesn't have to give a cut to anyone. One only tips employees. However, that said, if you feel that you are being undercharged to the extreme, then you might feel free to insist that she charge you a bit more.

Yes you should tip her.
Just because she is your friend now
doesn't mean that you shouldn't.
Work is Work, honey
And don't assume she is going to charge you less.
What kind of friend are you?
Don't try to take advantage cause you are friends now.
Pay her what you are suppose to pay her without any and, ifs or buts, Even if she charging you full price, at least you don't have to wait in a salon for your turn so you are really saving time.

My sister-in-law is a hair dresser, and she cuts my hair at her house for $10. That whole $10 goes in her pocket, so I don't tip her because she gets to keep the entire fee. Although, if she colors my hair or something more intense like that I usually give her a little more than she asked for.

If what she is charging you is what she would normally get after the salon takes its cut, then I would say tip her.

I did that for years with a stylist who became a friend. Since she gave me a deep discount rate for a hair cut at her house, I always gave her $5 more.

Give her the price that the salon charges.

its the way she makes a living. always offer to pay and tip. most likely, she'll say she doesnt want it and then you do a quick 'are you sure?' and if she says shes sure, leave it at that. but even if she didnt take it, you should offer each time she cuts your hair so she doesnt think youre taking her for granted or just using her. always offer, and hope you get away w/paying nothing.

No. Ask her how much she is charging you and that is what you pay her. This is 100% profit and if she is a professional hair dresser she would not expect you to tip her.

I say tip her but be subtle so that she does not take offense. Say something like "coz I really love the way I look" to compliment her work of art.

Better safe than sorry. Besides, what better way to show someone that you value and appreciate their work.

She is risking the loss of her license by performing her work outside a salon for money, give her that tip.
