"In a construction project that will eventually reach across 2,050 miles, hundreds of rivers and long stretches of forests and fields, India has been quietly sealing itself off from Bangladesh, its much poorer neighbor. Sections totaling about 1,550 miles have been built the past seven years....

In the United States, the decision to fence 700 miles of the Mexican border triggered months of political debate ranging across issues from immigration reform to the environmental impact. When Israel announced it would build a 425-mile barrier around the West Bank, an international outcry erupted.

But there has been barely a ripple over India's far larger project, launched in earnest in 2000 amid growing fears in New Delhi about illegal immigration and cross-border terrorism.

The Bangladesh government made a few complaints — the fence felt like an insult, as if their country was a plague that needed to be quarantined — but soon gave up."

So here's a plan. We let in so many Indians that they become the majority, since obviously they are MUCH more logical than our government....

Thoughts?

( and yes, I was kidding. Obviously, the benefit of reducing illegal immigration would be obviated by such mass immigration. Still, other countries seem to have no problem at all doing the logical thing. What is OUR problem?)

Many - I dare say most - Americans are probably unaware of the existance of Bangladesh. Until I had occassion to work with a Bangladeshi in the 90s, I was under the impression it was part of India, myself.

As I've mentioned before, we Americans have a strong isolationist streak, and we tend to ignore international politics much of the time.

Because it involves completely different countries. The citizens of India have a different view of things than people over here. The reason we aren't saying much other here is because it doesnt really affect us in any why so why get all up in arms about it.
