I wasn't a practicing Christian when our kids were at home, (they're over 30 and pushing 30 now) but we spanked, grounded and would take away privileges.Spanking is a tool, but not the only tool. Would do the same now.
"Spare the rod and spoil the child" means if you don't punish misbehavior the child will be spoiled. I agree with that because I've seen it.

My child just turned 24 on the 11th. She was spanked when necessary, always a last resort. I think in her whole life she received 4 spankings. Sparing the rod means that if you do not discipline(spanking would be a form of discipline) your child properly your child will not become a responsible adult, you will spoil your child.

My sons are grown now, but on rare occasions I did spank them. This was always reserved for times when they were caught lying.
Other than that, as they grew older the punishments had to change as they grew. It usually revolved around denial of privileges..either short term or long term.
Sparing the rod means to me be too lazy or uncaring to try and correct bad behavior.

the native americans taught that the best teacher was the hand that is burned. if my child messes up, we sit and point the stupid actions out, how we can fix them, why they are aweful, etc. until they could speak we would spank them. along with a firm no.

Time outs for the little guy. For the bigger ones, taking away phones and laptops. Works like a charm!

They beat them with a rod, of course:
Proverbs 23:13
Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
