Hello.. My 3 month Maltese is coughing like something is stuck in his throat.. He's been vaccinated and today I got the antibiotic for him.. He started to vomit too. The vet told me that he'll be okay but I'm very concerned. It gets worse in the night.. They told me to change the food and feed him real baby food like Gerber.. Is it okay for my puppy? and which are the best for Maltese? PLEASE HELP ME!! Even my vet seems they really don't care..

If your pet is nauseated take away all food and water and give it the baby non-flavored pediolyte, this will settle its stomach and replace any electrolytes it may have lost during nausea attacks.Try boiling some chicken, cut into small pieces, put in a blender with small amount of water and puree. Most dogs will eat this when nothing else will stay on the stomach. You may also give your pet the Children;s Robertussin, about 1/3 of a teaspoon every 4 to 6 hours for the cough. Also place a dab of plain honey on its tongue to keep its sugar level from being low. This will elevate its bloodsugar and keep it from getting weak.

Hello, it's great to know your dog has such a good mom :)
Don't worry too much, your vet knows what he's doing. Your puppie has probably a viral throat infection, and thats also a reason why he vomits. Baby food will not harm him in any way.
All the best to you and your puppie!!
These sore throats can last for some time, so be patient.

Take him to another vet for a seond opinion. Have them look down is throat for a foreign object. If nothing have them take an xray of his chest to see if there is something going on with his heart or lungs (even young dogs can get heart problems. Is he on heartworm preventative?? Coughing is a sign of heartworms. Get him tested if he isnt on any heartworm preventative.
I hope these suggestions help and you baby is ok.
Get a second opinion. Nothing is wrong with that. We have people coming in all the time asking for 2ND opinions from other places.

My adult dog was doing that earlier this week and we took her to the vet, got x rays and $130 later we find out she's probably just fighting off Kennel cough (she's up to date on all her shots and bordatella) and they gave us some doggie cough suppressants. We only had to give her one and she was better, but it sounded awful and lasted about 3 or 4 days. She would cough so much it made her vomit a little bit. Gross.

to us it seems like he has something similar to a kennel cough. our dog had it @ one time. our vet told us to save some money to get Delsym 12. which we bought at Wal Mart in the medication section. being that he is real young if you do get it give him a child dose. this stuff is about $12/bottle, in a big orange box. hope this helps.
