Surrendering pride and glory is not an easy thing to do. Many people can not place an Almighty creator before their own selves. Perhaps by accepting Christ many people feel they have to stop doing things they like. Christianity is against violence, rebellion, sex outside of marriage, irresponsibility, and personal pride. Christianity is for loving all people regardless of anything, surrendering a life of sin, family values, community, and forgiveness. Some people don't want to give Christ a chance because they may find peace without debauchery. In our world debauchery and pride is good. The worth of a man is measured by how drunk he can get and how many women he can have sex with outside of marriage. The worth of a woman is determined by how close she can look like a celebrity and how many expensive pieces of clothing she can acquire. Good news is Christ wants everyone in the Kingdom of Heaven. He loves everyone from the most righteous individual to the lowest sinner.
Just my thoughts. Peace be with you.

I believe there are many answers to this question. Many above me are true. But I believe one of the most reasons for people refusing Christianity is fear. People are afraid of serving God. Why? I do not know. Maybe it's because they are afraid of loosing a part of them, or something they own or do? Maybe it's because they will have to admit that they are not in control of their own life? Maybe they are afraid that something terrible about them might be reveled to others or even to them own selves? I do not know. I can't say for them, but I will say for me is that ones I was afraid, but now that I became a Christian, my fears are gone. How Ironic and yet it makes perfect sense.

From a Christian standpoint, it's pretty simply. People naturally refuse Christianity because of their sinful nature. Man is automatically in offense to God.

It's because of Fundamentalism and Evangelism. They're all up in your face. To be quite honest with you if I had been in a Liberal Christian church or branch of Christianity I might still be a Christian. To be honest with you the reason why I left Christianity was because I was in a Fundamentalist and Evangelical type Christian church. I ended up getting baptized when my heart wasn't in it simply to appease the masses and shut them up so that they could leave me alone as they were all in my face and I felt pressured to being baptized.

It is based on the premise that there is something seriously wrong with each of us, a condition that only Jesus can cure. People do not like to feel that there is anything wrong with them. They prefer to feel that they are basically good.
Secondly, people like to do things their way. They do not like the idea of "Thy will be done." They would rather do whatever they want, whenever they want, however and with whomever they want. They do not like restrictions.
They'd rather not be persecuted. It is far easier to criticize someone who is trying to live a Godly life than to try themselves. Besides, if they are ever pricked by their consciences, they can always claim that it is because we are hypocrites why they do not even try.

In my case, a lack of faith in a 'creator' God. Pretty much scuppers everything from there on, don't you think?
There's more such as Biblical inconsistencies, but you asked for the main reason.
Hope that helps.

Because God chooses whom He will give faith to, and who He won't. Read Romans 8:28 - 30 and Ephesians 1 & 2. What do you see? God choosing, God predestinating, God selecting, salvation is all about God, not us. If someone does not believe, it is because they do not have the ability to believe. Their eyes and ears are closed, and they have a heart of stone. Only God, through His grace and mercy, can open the eyes and ears and replace a heart of stone with a heart of flesh.

Because of the agresivity of some christians that try to spread it. Every one runs away from people that seem to want to push their beliefes "down your throat"
