Let me explain in a way that is easier to understand; If you are in love with someone you would not care to do anything that would make this person you think less of them or their words of what they want you to do. That is what people that fear God do, because they love God as he loved us then they do not want to make God like us any less or give the enemy a reason to bad talk God's sons or daughters.
Genesis 20:11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.
Exodus 1:17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
Exodus 1:21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
Leviticus 19:14 Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD.
Leviticus 25:17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God:for I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus 25:36 Take thou no usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.
Leviticus 25:43 Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.
Deuteronomy 8:6 Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
Deuteronomy 32:17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
2 Kings 17:38 And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods.
2 Kings 17:39 But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.
Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
Proverbs 2:5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
Ecclesiastes 3:14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Fearing God is like fearing anything else. God is Almighty and the only thing worthy of fear!
When the hurricanes hit New Orleans and devastated everything in its path people saw God's power, and He wasn't even mad. Can you imagine when He does set His wrath against us?
Yes, I do believe that to fear the LORD is a good thing.
God Bless You

You are NOT stupid. Heck, you are brighter than most on here for understanding there is a God we have to answer to. To fear the Lord does not mean, as you said, to be scared of Him. But Scripture says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." When we fear God it means we respect Him, honor Him. How?? By keeping His Word / obeying Him because He alone is God.

I think it means you have respect for a higher power. That respect would necessarily translate into living your life differently than if you felt there were either no God at all, or that what God thinks of you is unimportant and you can therefore do whatever you want in living your life.
A God-fearing person would always have God in the back of their mind and that would inform their decisions, actions, words, etc. their whole life.

God-fearing = being fearful of your Loving God.
Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you.
— George Carlin
Yes, that is the essence of religion isn't it? Scare your pets into believing in you. We are all indoctrinated to be afraid, in fact terrified of our 'Creator'. Fear is an integral part of religion, especially fear of Death. Humanity's achilles heel if you will. But remember this...
Why should I fear death? If I am, death is not. If death is, I am not. Why should I fear that which cannot exist when I do?
— Epicurus, (ca. 341-270 B.C.E.);
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
— Epicurus (341 BC - 270 BC)
Tis foolish to fear what you cannot avoid.
— Publilius Syrus (100 BC)
Millions long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
— Susan Ertz
The average man, who does not know what to do w/ his life, wants another one which will last forever.
— Anatole France (1844 - 1924)

It means having a healthy respect for God and what He is to us. The same way a son would fear displeasing his father but not being actually scared of him because he knows that his father loves him, although this analogy is limited because there are human fathers who do not love their kids. Remember though that 1 John 4:8 states that "He that does not love has not come to know God, because God is love."Fear of God then is reverential fear of displeasing Him not because of Hell or that He might smite us dead, but because we love him and feel bad when we disobey him

If you are God fearing, you would firstly respect God and that means using capital G, respecting all that is God's creation.
Generally God fearing would be acting in a manner that you knew that God is always watching you and act in a manner pleasing to Him.
Thanking God for all that you have, knowing that all belongs not to you, anyway since you entered this world with nothing and shall leave in like manner. blah blah blah

I believe it means to be in awe of His Holiness, power and magnitude of His love. It is to live a life respectful of all He is and all He has created. To realise the greatness of His mercy towards us and His grace. Grace is giving us what we don't deserve and mercy is withholding what we do because He loves us. He owes us nothing and we owe Him everything. It is basing our words, thoughts and actions on what would bring Him the most glory and not satisfy our ego. To promote the Kingdom of Heaven during our lifetime, living for the greater good.

It is simply respecting God. Many people have answered saying its being scared of Gods wrath, which is wrong. It's not fear at all, it is knowing that you love God and because you love him you abide by his rules, stating it as being afraid of God is wrong, because we shouldn't be afraid of God as he loves us all, but we should be weary not to be against him as he is all-powerful. It isn't fear, it's respect
