Since you mention the Galapagos, it is interesting that on islands with no animals that eat cactus, the spines are soft and furry, but on islands with animals that eat cactus, like the tortoises, the spines are sharp.

They have spines for protection, a cuticle ( waxy material ) covering them to protect them from excessive water loss, extensive root system to hold water for future use, thick stems that carry on photosynthesis and store water. They can reproduce both sexually and asexually as well.
