Ok, I'm thinking of getting a tattoo done. Well, several actually, but I thought I'd better start off small...
Has anyone got any good tips about getting a tattoo or about choosing what it is exactly that you want? I've got some definite ideas but it would be nice to get some new ones!

My advice to you is to make sure that it is a tattoo of something that is dear to you. I have a tat on my back and it has a rose in the center of it. My middle name is Rose. My rose on my back also represents my daughter. She is the center of my world and when I see the rose I think of her. It doesn't have to be something sappy, just something that has meaning to you.
EX. like if you have a brother in Iraq, get a patriotic one to make you think of him, you get the idea... just make sure it is going to be something that will have the same meaning and be just as cool in 25 years!

If you have ideas already drawn up look around for a reputable artist and bring your idea to him/her and they'll be able to draw something new, or give you new ideas. Tattoo artists know best what works and what doesn't work for a tattoo, so that would be my best advice. The best tattoo I have came from bring a somewhat simple drawing to a really good artist and letting him change it up a little, adding detail, etc. and it turned out really well. Just make sure you're getting it done by someone who knows what they're doing.

Try to choose something with particular significance. Tattoos are permanent so if you have something that has always been special to you you'll want to utilize that rather than something popular or like a cheesy cartoon or something like that. Remember that this is something you'll have to see for the rest of your life, so you'll want to think "will this look ridiculous in 20 years?" Also remember that depending upon what line of work you are in or will go into you'll want to keep placement and content tasteful, because again they are permanent. Also make sure you research and look into tattoo parlors extensively as well as paying a lot of attention to taking care of your tattoo after it's been done. If you don't take care of it it will ruin the integrity of your tattoo and you'll end up with something you don't like. You can also spend time researching tattoo ideas in tattoo magazines or on the Internet.

Like others have said make sure it's something that in 20 years you would still be proud of...

Also keep in ming that the pain will vary depending on where you get your tattoo...

Any place where the skin is close to the bone (tops of feet, Sturnum, shin) will hurt more than a place that has more flesh.

Keep it simple. Take your ideas into the tattoo parlor and sit down and talk them over, let the artist help you design one from your ideas rather than just randomly choosing one. It's always what I do and I havent been dissatisfied yet!

make sure that whatever you get is going to be something you're going to want to look at YEARS from now. then think of something that really makes a statement about YOU or that defines something you really love. a good idea is to draw something out, or if you're not an artist get with a tattoo artist to draw out what you describe to them. don't EVER settle... make sure your artist understands exactly what it is you want done, and if they can't accomplish it on paper move on to another artist. it took me 3 years to find someone to put my kids names on my ankle, because something as special as THEM needed to be perfect... but now i've got it done and it's still one of my favorite pieces.

anyhow, whatever you decide, good luck! make it great, because once it's there there's no turning back!

For your first one i would do what you like the most in the world and i dont mean like a girl friend or anything like that because you never know when they wont be there any more. So like a dragon if you collect dragons or a sun if you love summertime. You get the idea.
