How and where can I get watermarks that I can edit with whatever name I want , like at Corbis or Getty images? And preferably for FREE or very cheap to buy? I saw on a web site and I liked it, they had images without any watermarks (or so they let you believe it) and when you move the arrow of the mouse over it it displays the watermark. Even something like that I would want to know where to get. Thanks.

Watermarking images for me and for a lot of people is quite annoying. Firstly it kinda blocks the image so that people can't really see the full effect of the image. Secondly I don't watermark my images because I don't upload them at full high quality. I resize them to 1024x768 and change the dpi to 75.

So if they try to print the images it will be really bad quality and small. But for watermarking an image I would then use photoshop. There is a similar program like photoshop called GIMP.

Basically it would go in steps like this

1. open image
2. create new layer
3. design your image on the new layer
4. turn down the transparency to desired level
5. click SAVE-AS not save because then you will save over your original image do not do that save as a different filename

here is a link to GIMP

Such is the problem of watermarking. I feel your pain. This is my personal opinion - some will disagree. Watermarks only work when they are really huge, right across the middle, impossible to remove and VERY ugly. If you have a quiet little watermark in a corner, it won't stop any thieves. Copyright is automatic and instant. Some people understand the concept of copyright but have zero morals or conscience, others have no bad intentions but are as thick as a bag of hammers and are totally clueless about copyright ....... both of those groups will steal whatever they can get their hands onto. So now the question is this: do you want to totally ruin the look of your images, or put up with theft? I think the answer is this: make them a fairly small size, heavy compression. Only tiny prints can be achieved, nothing much will look very good. If something REALLY matters, don't post it on the internet. Keep untouched, unaltered originals should you ever need to fight for your cause in a court of law. YOU need to decide what is worth the effort and cost of a lawsuit and what isn't. Sad, isn't it?

If you want, I believe I have a PHP script that would do that for you automatically, given whatever text you wanted.
It's a PHP function which automatically adds a watermark for the specified image(s).
