I've been running for awhile and I've been hitting a plateau for a few weeks.
No matter how much I practice, I won't get faster (surprisingly, I sometimes even get slower!) and I'm stuck!

Have you ever gone through a plateau in any sport? Like what did you do to get past it? Please respond!

I ran low 13's (slow) for the 2 mile my sophomore year of high school. My junior year I got a good coach, ran some splits and repeat 440s and went to state in cross country my junior year. I hit 11:32 for a best and most were under 12. So. . . do some sprint workouts.

Don't be discouraged, Lita. This can happen to everyone. It could be your training or it could just be that right your your body has reached its limits. Depending on your age and sex, you could have reached your limit but that is not likely. Just keep trainingly wisely and you WILL break this plateau. Sometimes its all mental...one good workout or a good week of training and watch the times drop.

Think of it this way...at least you are running and not injured, which happens to many runners.

Well whenever I hit something like that I always consult my coach, he will tell me what to do to get past it. If you run on flat ground most of the time, then try running hills. If you run the same speed on every run, then try some telephone pole fartlecks: you jog the distance between 2 poles and then you double that distance in a sprint/fast jog. You may have already gotten this info. from someone and so I'm going to tell you that the main thing to do is just to switch up your routine. The keyword for running is "change."

If you are getting slower then you are over training. If you are stuck on a performance level you must do different things in training to get your body conditioned to running faster. You can shock your system with different distances and times and recovery so that your energy systems can adapt to the new performance levels. You must also realize there are limitations on our abilities so you may have reached that level for now. As you mature and train you can move to better times. That is why we have seasons and do not compete 12 months a year.
