Because for many this was a desperate 1 time live or die decision. Sink or swim ......you don't complain about the temp of the water or what suit you had to wear or what was easier and more comfortable or if you liked the person who tossed you in. You did it. Now it's like leaves in the wind ...just toe touching the water and taking what they can before they move on.
Past immigrants many times made sure just 1 family member "made" it. They knew the sacrifices their families made and didn't want to tarnish those efforts. It was MORE than just a buck at stake.
Past immigrants were greatful to be here. They didn't have this sense of entitlement they do now.
We are even guilty of it. A job isn't a career, a choice isn't the end all to our life. Back then it was. You didn't get to just opt out and run as easily as people do now.
We've gone to extreems where no one is responsible or accountable for anything because so many other EASY options are out there.
Hey......I'm guilty. I remember as a kid wanting a bike SO bad. It was one of my fondest memories and one of my most cherished posessions. Then when I had kids....I couldn't wait to pass the joy down. I wanted the bike...I remembered what it ment to me and I really thought they would be so happy to have one. They could have cared less. It wasn't important to them. Not REALLY important. They never learned to WANT it so bad they would do almost anything to get it. Ya...they got it...they were happy for a day and it was rust within a year. Beleive it or not.....I still have mine. Cherry condition. Over 40 years later. Once you feel entitled to it with no difficulty or sacrifice along the way....it looses meaning and worthiness. Heck.....so many things were so important that now mean nothing. Citizenship is nothing anymore when you just come over, drop a kid and scream demands alot. Opra nailed it when she wanted to help people here and they wanted new Air Jordans......then to go to Africa where all they wanted to do was learn to read.
Ya...crossing the border is no cruise.......but when it's just as easy as crossing a border.....it means nothing. When there's no real personal sacrifice....it's nothing then. Hey get here....get a free education and all this......learning a new language and abide the laws is MINIMUL to ask for the benefits you get. If it's TOO much to ask.....you don't belong here.

English is what most of America speaks in the business world. With so many immigrants, they should learn to speak English. If the U.S is not going to cater to a German immigrant, then they shouldn't cater to Spanish speaking immigrants.
20 yrs ago, but now refuse? Hmmm...that is a good question...I don't have a clue. I know we are becoming more diverisifed, maybe that is why. I just think that English should be the offical language and people should learn since they have the ESL now available. People can still speak their native languages at home, own time, etc.

In a sense the world has become a more global society. With technology helping to expand the communication divide, people don't need to necessarily learn English to be successful in this country or many others in the first or second world scope.
Years ago it was vital to know English, now if you are multi- lingual its a plus. The US does not have a national language unlike many other countries so when people come over to the united states for example, they know an ethnic community that speaks their language and understands their customs will be here somewhere in the states.
I guess they figure why "assimilate" when I can be comfortable in my enclave and stay the same.

Because back then globalism was nothing like it is today, so their connection with their homeland was much less than what it is today. Today immigrants can stay in touch with their families in their home countries and watch television in their own language, besides the fact that a lot of things are being translated for them. Back in the old days people became totally isolated from native lands and so they were forced to learn the language.

It's a result of the multiculturalist movement. Prior to the 70s, when multiculturalism first appeared, the accept model for immigration was assimilation, which meant learning the language and adopting much of the culture. Multiculturalism has gained broad acceptance in the US, and it teaches that the languages and cultures of all other societies must be respected.

I believe it have happened because there's not need to anymore. If you need to speak english for your daily life, then you will find the motivation to learn english.
If you can go to work, go to school, be attended in a grocery store, and the butcher, and all the services you can get and deal with speaking spanish, then what's the purpose.
You know what i mean? many women who stays home, and speak at home and with neighbors in spanish, they will never learn, and they won't be willing to learn english, what's the point.
While their children will learn english, because they will notice that will make their lifes better, they will need it for school, and to socialize, and later to get a better job.

Some of them fell like they don't need to, because whatever they go their language is also spoken. they don't even need to learn to watch tv or listen to the radio because there's already some spanish speaking stations. 20 years ago they had to learn the language otherwise they were gonna be descrimated, now new immigrant don't feel the need to do exept people who really want to educate and be part of this society.

I have no idea, but it really annoys me when illegals refuse to accept English-speaking Americans. I've seen quite a few of those type on Yahoo Answers, even demanding every American to learn Spanish.

Because each group of immigrants from Mexico has a lower IQ than the previous group. The immigrants have come from different places in Mexico. The smartest Mexicans stay home or immigrated decades ago. Today's illegals are decendents of the lowest level of Mexicans. They literally cannot learn a new language after becoming an adult.
