i am new to vista and am really struggling. i try to install lw basic but it says i need to install a newer version of java runtime environment.. but which one? i'm completely baffled and am going mad without any free music downloads. hope you can help

the Java install for Vista isn't any different than other Windows versions. Your Vista is most likely 32-bit (if it was 64-bit you'd know it.)
one note: When you install new versions of Java you can go into Add/Remove Programs (or actually Vista's version of it) and uninstall old versions of it. (Actually that kind of helps programs like Limewire.)
If you've never used Limewire before make sure you read thru their FAQs on the site and also look thru Limewire's options or preferences to get a good understanding of it. -- Just a suggestion.

Java runtime will not work on vista their isn't a vista version and no windows software will work with vista either why is everybody installing vista when it don't work it's obvious if your all having problems after installing vista something should be telling you to go back to xp...

Limewire isn't the best place to get music, and over time, infected files can damage your system. Perhaps you should try using multiply.com or dogpile.com audio/music searches for free music downloads. :\
