If you want a bird that you can hold, snuggle with, and form a bond with you should choose the quaker. We have 2 and are in the process of adopting another. They do live a long time and yes they are loud, but they will also change your life! Mine make me laugh everyday, they are extremely intelligent little birds with big personalities. They are wonderful birds for first time owners. They are pretty quickly trained (my last one took about three weeks). They usually are one person birds, and adore their owners. They are small and easy for first time bird people to handle. You need to check the laws for your state (go to www.quakerville.com I think they have the links) to make sure they are legal in your state. Since a bunch escaped in JFK airport in 1960 and have colonized in some states, there are laws against owning them in some places. Don't let anyone tell you that you should not own a bird!! All bird people had to start somewhere...Good luck!!!!

That all depends on what you're looking for in a bird.
If you want one to hand tame and let out of the cage and cuddle and play with, then a quaker. Quakers can be taught to talk as well. But yes, they can be loud. Especially first thing in the am, then again in the evening. Some have been known to scream all hours of the day if not trained and handled properly.
Canaries are fun to watch, listen to them sing, etc etc. Very easy to take care of and require a much smaller cage. I'm not very experienced there. I prefer birds that are tame and loving pets so I never had finches or canaries.
Lots of luck!

both are relativley easy to take care of, and good starter birds. canaries cannot talk only sing/chirp. quaker's can talk and can get louder. Are you looking at a quaker parakeet or quaker parrot? there is a difference. I would suggest googling both spieces and doing research to find out which one would fit your financial, and living situation. Also on the care of that species.

The more you read up and learn the better decsion you'll be able to make and have a better relationship with your bird.

Quaker Parrots can live 30-40 yrs! They are very loud! They can turn on you to the point you can not handle them any longer! If you aren't willing to put up with a loud bird that hurts when it bites, that will be around a long time, then don't get a quaker!

I'd suggest a canary if you are not experienced in raising parrots. Quaker parrots need a lot more attention.

Any parrot is going to involve a lot of responsibility; it's almost like a child. I'd go with the canary.

how long do each of them live, and
how long will you expect to have them?

as long as you know you have a responsibility of caring for your pet for it's life-time. I would love a goose, but they live for 50 years and it'd outlive me!
