Ohmygosh. Historical ignorance is rampant.

World War II began in September of 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and the Allies decided to start fighting back.

America entered World War II when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.

The European theater was closed down in April of 1945 when Germany surrendered to the allies.

The modern world is still living with the consequences of World War 2, the most titanic conflict in history. Just over 67 years ago on September 1st 1939, Germany invaded Poland without warning. By the evening of September 3rd, Britain and France were at war with Germany and within a week, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa had also joined the war. The world had been plunged into its second world war in 25 years. Six long and bloody years of total war, fought over many thousand of square kilometres followed. From the Hedgerows of Normandy to the streets of Stalingrad, the icy mountains of Norway to the sweltering deserts of Libya, the insect infested jungles of Burma to the coral reefed islands of the pacific. On land, sea and in the air, Poles fought Germans, Italians fought Americans and Japanese fought Australians in a conflict which was finally settled with the use of nuclear weapons. World War 2 involved every major world power in a war for global domination and at its end, more than 60 million people had lost their lives and most of Europe and large parts of Asia lay in ruins

The first battles began with the Japanese invading china in the early 1930's. The failure of the Brits and Frogs as they retreated in the face of the advance of the Nazi's in capturing Austria and Czechoslovakia were the first "battles" in Europe. Open hostilities began on Sept 1, 1939, and ended on May 8, 1945. Pacific hostilities ended on 17 August 1945 with the formal surrender of Japan occurring on 02 September 1945.

If you are talking about the worldwide war and not just when the Americans entered the war the World War actually started on September 18, 1931, when Japanese forces invaded Manchuria in China.

Technically it started in Europe in 1938 after the Munich pact, when England and France traded Chekhoslovakia to be ripped off by Germany and Poland.

In Asia it started in 1937 when Japan invaded China.

It never ceases to amaze me that someone with internet access to Y!A lacks the wherewithal to do their own research and homework on something so astoundingly well documented and available.
