There is this cat in my condo complex that just sits by peoples doors wanting to get in. However, no one in our complex owns it. I think some lady that moved out use to feed some neighborhood cats. It's friendly, and it's sad to see him around. Should I take him to the SPCA? Or, will they kill it if not adopted? Please help.

Josh

Hi Josh,

It sounds like a shame you cannot adopt this cat as you are obviously a caring and intelligent person who could give a good home :-)

Also it is sad because if the cat is friendly, it means it knows and likes people. Wild cats or alley cats which are raised away from people are usually not friendly towards humans without a LOT of work!

Make sure the cat IS a stray, and not just a visitor, though. Some cats have a little 'chip' behind their neck for ID purposes, you can usually feel it easily, it feels like a tiny hard lump under their skin. Others have a tattoo inside their ear. The pound/shelter will know what to look for!

If it definitely IS a stray, here are some suggestions:

1) Let the cat inside the building, make up a bed in the foyer and feed it scraps. Unfortunately, if anyone in the complex objects, they could harm the cat or complain about you doing this, so it is not practical.

2) You could advertise for a good home for the cat. If you can, take a picture of the cat and print it out on a piece of paper. Put it on the noticeboard at school, or ask your Mum or Dad if it would be OK to put it on a noticeboard at the local supermarket. Out your Mum or Dad's name on it, not yours and make sure you get their permission to do this.

3) Last resort ~ Find a shelter which does not kill unwanted animals, and take the cat there. Sadly, there are not enough homes for unwanted animals, but the cat will have a much better chance in a shelter than on the street. You should phone them first and explain the whole situation, and ask their rules about when you can bring the cat, etc. You don't want to get there and find out they are closed! Also, when you take the cat to the shelter, make sure you also take along whatever money you can afford, or some cans of cat food or something, to help them with their expenses.

Good luck and best wishes to you and the cat! :-)

I think they may kill it if not adopted. Just find a corner where you can leave him food and water for now. He can be the condo cat! Get him a name tag with your phone on so that he doesn't get taken to a shelter that will kill him, and if you can give him a deworming pill every six months and a vaccine every year, he'll be perfect. Can you take him in temporarily until you find him a home among your friends and people you know? Or even keep him. cats only need a litterbox and some food every morning, they are no trouble.

If you can adopt it.. do it.. cats don't require much attention like u dont need to take them for walks like for dogs..

Its not a bad idea to give it to SPCA.. yeh they do kill it if no ones adopts it.. but depends on the place too it seems..
I came to know recently that due to global warming cats have started breeding like crazy!! and all SPCA's are filled with many cats..

or try to find among your friends whether anyone is interested to adopt a cat!!

hope this helps..

Unless you or someone else takes the cat in, your choices are: the cat may leave, you can find out who in your area has an agency that will take cats and keep them until adopted, or give it to the SPCA and ask them to contact you if nobody adopts it because they usually put the animals to sleep if nobody adopts them. Good luck!

if the cat is hanging around doors and trying to get in, he has learned that food and shelter can be found there. he was once a pet, abandoned or lost. if he can't find food on his own he will die, slowly and in pain and fear. if you or someone doesn't rescue him and give him love and comfort then take him to a shelter. even if he doesn't find a home there he will not suffer any more. put yourself in his fur for a minute, what if he had the home and you were lost, hungry, and alone? is there some way you can help him? find hiim a home? this is the greatest thing humans can do, help those weaker and in need.

I would bet he is an indoor cat and is simply looking for a new home. If you take him to the ASPCA, they may be able to find a home for him, but if they can't place him, they may put him down.

If you don't want a pet cat, maybe you can find someone who does. Cat will need a full medical check. You should also have him checked to see if he has a chip in his neck that lists his owner. One of our cats (adopted from the ASPCA) has a chip and if she gets lost, we can find her with it.

The best bet, for the cat, is to return him to indoor status. Outdoor cats have really hard lives unless they live on farms - and even then they don't live very long as a general rule.

Why not adopt it yourself? If it really has no owner, adoption is always nice. Plus it's free, until you pay for shots, food, checkups etc. Otherwise give it to a humane society where they take care of it until someone buys it or they will put it to sleep. You have choices. OR you could put an ad in the paper for a free cat.

Josh- The truth of the matter is that the kitty will probably be killed at your local shelter. Please look for a no-kill animal sanctuary in your area. They may be able to help you.

Can you adopt the kitty? Maybe he/she really wants to be an indoor cat. There are local groups who could help with spay/neuter costs and vet bills if you adopt the cat.

Good luck. It is good of you to care.

Are there any no-kill shelters in your area? If there are take it to one of those. That way you're guaranteed the cat won't be killed. If there aren't any other options, give it to the SPCA.

You'll want to look for a No-Kill Shelter, which won't kill the little lost guy.

Second, if you contact the No-Kill Shelter and ask what to do, they'll very probably tell you how to capture him safely so that you can bring him in.
