You refer to--OTHMAN BIN AFFA'AN Radhia Allahu Anaha (The third Caliph 644-656 C.E.)
Affaan--Uthman's father--came from Omayya branch of the Quraish from Mecca, the name Affaan comes originally from a name of a region in Etiopia.--that is what I found.

P.S.--of cause son of Affaan is a last name but a question was what Affaan means!

All NAMES of Arabic origin have meanings. So it's not just 'a name', cuz names which are truly Arabic always have meanings.

Aaffan (عفّان) comes from the word Affen (عفن), which when you look it up in the dictionary, you find that it means one of the following:

1) عفن أو فسد = Something that is spoiled. Like rotten food or blood.

2) صعد = Climb, like in climb a mountain.

3) بلي من الماء = Got wet with water.

OTHMAN BIN AFFA'AN was the third Caliph.
His father's name was Affaan.
