Interestingly, the ancient Semitic- Babylonian calendar had 365 days as does the ancient Mayan calendar the Haab;365 days.
There are similarities between the two cultures-civilizations even though they lived across the Meditteranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean;
length of calendar is the same,both predict end of the world about the same time,ziguarts (step pyramids) are located in mid east & Central America, used hyrogliphics (Egyptians more than Babylonians but almost equally to Mayans use of Hyrogliphs), Egyptians burried Pharohs in Pyramids,Mayans burried Pharohs under Pyramids for similar reasons (They believed the rulers would become a God or gain eternal life).
Sure is a lot of "random ?" co-incidences . It may be the end of us and not the planet itself, due to an undetected Comet smashing into us one day,because there aren't enough eyes on the sky or nuclear missle exchanges or just nothing.

I've heard of 2012 being the end of the world, not just from the Mayans but from other sources as well. I watched a documentary on the History Channel called "Bible Code" and some researchers have found within the bible clues leading to the belief that a comet will strike the Earth in that year. Another passage was also interpreted to say that we may be able to destroy the comet before it strikes. Personally, I don't believe any of it, but I've heard a great deal about 2012.

Enlightenment is reached through self acknowledgement and self acception, if one cannot accept who they are as a person, an individual and being then they are not Enlightened.
Such things are not reached because of the date on a calender. Although I believe in Numberology and various other Zodiac theory, this doesn't quite make my belief.
I don't believe it at all!
But hey, the world is gullable so lets just wait and see, I'll see you all in 2013!

There is really only one way to know for sure. Hang around for New Year's Eve, 2013.
It could be that it will be the end of the world because an alien space ship will land on Earth. This would mean the end of "the world", and the beginning of "WORLDS" - plural.

No one knows when the world ends - only God knows that, but He has sent us down signs. Most of the minor signs have occured like increased number of floods etc. I think reaching enlightenment is one of the major signs

The end of the world will happen in 2012. In 2012, the world will end in 2018. In 2018, the end of the world will happen in 2036. See how this works?

No one knows.
The Mayans were real smart people - google and read up about them and the cities they built - their buildings are all aligned with the sun and the stars.
