I have just bought a Nikon D40 and want to know how large can I realistically print before I lose definition. Is A3 achievable for example and is A1 out of the question ?

If you take pictures at the highest resolution and do not crop them, A3 is certainly achievable. A2 would be feasible as "poster" quality and A1 could be achieved by deliberately imposing a visual effect using an image manipulation program to overlay (say) a newsprint or oilpainting effect.

The chances are... well you may have an A1 printer, but then what would you do with pictures that big. Do you have a D40 or D40x? But anyway both of them should manage A3.

I read if you are using the RAW format , then A3 is no problem I guess as along as you don't convert to jpeg and compress/crop further A3 must be acheiveable also in JPeG.
