I was raised catholic, but I overcame that years ago and don't consider it a handicap any more. If I were to have been married in a catholic ceremony then I would have to be in a church. I heard some priests discussing why and they said god wants you to be married in a sanctified place created by man not some place created by nature. They really did say that. So I got married on Sunset Beach at sunset on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands by an Assembly of God minister and a Mouri priest. It could not have been better.

I think church marriages are for people who attend church. I guess I could get married in a church for my significant other but I wouldn't do it for my family. Its my relationship, not theirs. I may even decide I want a traditional wedding ceremony one day and go for it.
Personally though I always wanted to tie the knot outdoors in a place that is special to the 2 of us. That is IF IF IF I decide I even want to get married. I'm not big on the concept of marriage to begin with.

I'm not married so I haven't had to make that decision yet. For a marriage, I think I wouldn't mind greatly if it were in a Church (I could compromise this point) ... possibly a Unitarian church, and only because it would be more astatically appealing than a court house. When I die, there will be no priest at my funeral... that will be clear to my loved ones and in my will – this I will not compromise on.

I wanted to get married 18 years ago. Unfortunately my wife is religious and I am not. So, realizing that if I wanted to get married I had absolutely no choice in the matter - I just went along.
I did do one thing. We found a really great place to have the wedding outside in a park by the bay. This was a lot nicer for me then doing inside a religious building.
Good luck

I was married in a Lutheran chapel fifty-three years ago. Just because I don't believe does not mean that I shudder at the sight of a church. I have visited and photographed many country churches. To me, they're beautiful buildings. That doesn't mean that I have to believe what is preached during service.

Well for me, if I ever got married again, I would like a memorable wedding because I didn't have one the first time around.
I would not want to get married in a church and I would not want to get married in a court house either. I'd want something very unique and unusual.

I got married in a church (and I didn't burst into flames, or anything!) because of my family and my husband's family.
I don't know where you're located at, but you can also get married at Freedom Hall in Madison WI (www.ffrf.org) by a man who still has a license to marry, but is an atheist now, Dan Barker.

Some (not all) athiests will marry in a church to make someone else happy, and they don't really care. It's just a legal formality for them.
I personally wouldn't, however.

There are no rules about not getting married in a church for atheist.
Personally, I was married by a JP (justice of the peace).
