so because atheists don't believe in a god or an afterlife, they therefore do not have a valid viewpoint and thus should not be in this forum, right? that seems to be the view shared by pretty much everyone who asks the old "why are so many atheists (often spelled athiests) in this forum?". so simply because we don't have a belief in a higher power, that's supposed to disqualify our thoughts on issues of religion and spirituality? do the people who believe this hold this logic to everything in their daily lives? so, if you don't believe in using illegal drugs, does that mean you don't have a valid opinion on whether people who use them should go to jail or not? shouldn't only the people who abuse drugs be allowed to make that judgment, based on your narrow-sighted reasoning?

This is a very good question, wow.. and as an atheist I have to say both agree with the views you've express and pose the same questions. My personal thoughts on the matter are that Atheists have just as main and just as valid views as most religious people. Hell almost everyone I know who is not an atheist use to be religious or might have looked into religion.

Personal I find religion very interesting and as a hobby I read many books on the subject for many different religions and it was that ... not some strange hatred of a god or some need to be a heretic that made me understand what religion is.

I am not sure I am any help, considering this question was not directed toward other Atheists

When you discuss religion and start out, "I am an atheist," most people jump to the conclusion that you don't believe in anything.
While this may be far from the truth, many atheists have started out by saying, "I don't believe in anything you say, and you are illogical."

Most Christians I know, are very logical minded, and are very successful at what they do.

Some might think that this disbelief in a higher power would disqualify Atheists from talking about Religion...to a certain extent I might think the same thing. Most Religions and Churches are founded around the belief that there is a being that is more powerful than mortal humans, who gave us laws and preached love. Some might think that not believing in a supreme being means not believing in laws and principles.

I've always thought that atheism, at least as it's practiced by the likes of Michael Newdo, is a belief system in itself. I've always wondered if he's afraid of something and wants to get rid of what scares him.

As far as I'm concerned, Atheists may propose questions on the R&S section, or anywhere they want to, but only as long as they are openly minded enough to listen to all sides of the debate.

In closing, I would like to leave you with the following statement. "Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end. Therefore, while we can't prove that higher dimensions and beings exist, we also can't prove that they do not."

Well, it helps that so many Christians HAVE used illegal drugs, HAVE committed crimes, HAVE "hit rock bottom" - some have even had sex! Why do you think Jesus is such a popular guy in prison and rehab? The only difference between a Christian and a normal person is the morbid guilt complex. But, since misery loves company, they want to ensure that everybody else in the world is as abject and neurotic as they are. They resent with insane ferocity the existence of people who laugh at their pitiful position, and they do everything they can to make it impossible for the things that frighten them to exist. That explains why they're so completely intolerant of everything that doesn't read like some smarmy Sunday School sermon.

P.S. - It's also pretty ironic that "Hogie" just couldn't resist answering this question with Pascal's Wager! I guess it's two-for-one night at the R&S Bar.

Just throwing this out there-but maybe the asker just thought an atheist would not be interested in discussing something they don't believe in (god). It might not have been meant in offense. We all stick to areas that are of interest to us. I don't believe in ghosts, so I'm not inclined to read about them all day. Personally, I kinda like having different view points to learn from though. I think some of the atheists here ask some good questions.

Opinions are like noses, we all have one. I think it is great that so many atheists are here in this section. I think it is interesting to see what is coming out of your minds.

No one is qualified to disqualify your thoughts. Stick around. You have equally the same right to be here than anyone else.

Opinions make things interesting. Like gay rights, I am not a gay but I have the right to have my opinion about their issues. The same way that non-drug users have a right to say what happens to the people who use drugs. Everybody might not like your opinion, but that is your opinion and you have right to have it.

Your scenario about illegal drugs doesn't apply here. The fact that I don't believe in atheism has nothing to do with whether or not you should be penalized. Neither do I have an opinion on whether atheists should go to jail. God gave you a free will, to accept or reject Him. The issue is therefore between you and God, not you and me. Furthermore, it doesn't matter to me whether you're on this site or not. Hopefully, your purpose will be served.

Well put! But then, you must acknowledge the fact that these must be some very shallow, simple-minded, people, at least when it comes to logic and reason. That is, if they honestly believe themselves that nonsense that constantly spews out of their mouths.

At this point I always fall back on the Santa Claus and tooth fairy analogy... ;-)

That said, Ill now go to the Cars and Transportation forum and demand all non-mechanics to leave. Then, Im off to the Movie and TV forum, to ask all non-celebrities in there to vacate. Lastly, I will go to R&S and ask all Christians to leave, because we all know there is no such thing as a REAL Christian...

Narrow sighted reasoning - I could not have said it better myself.

I do not mind atheists coming into this forum and sharing their view. What i mind is when atheists come in here and slam christains about there grammar and spelling. Doesn't have a thing to do with religion or spirituality. And it is petty.
