It is important that immigrants learn about the US way of life and to speak English, but they should not reject their own culture or they will be truly rootless and floundering. In many cases what they bring with them is superior to what exists here (work ethic, family values, morality, etc.). It is possible that we have more to learn from them than to teach them.

I believe that we need to maintain our dominant culture, which is as a Western Democracy with English as the language that unites us. Western Europeans founded our nation and the culture and values of those people helped to make our country great. Look at the people who are failing in our society, the blacks and the Hispanics. Only 50% of them graduate from High School because they do not value education, they do not have respect for the law, and so many of them can’t speak proper English.
It is largely because many blacks and Hispanics do not assimilate and adopt the mores of the dominant culture that they are failing so badly in our country. Look at the high crime rates of those two groups, the high out-of-wedlock birth rates, and the huge numbers of them that belong to gangs. The white and Asian people in this country share similar values and that is why they are so successful.
In order to be successful in our nation you must value hard work, respect for the law, delayed gratification, and the importance of gaining a higher education. Without those values, most will fail to achieve success in the US.
Unless the immigrints assimilate, the US will become a disunited entity of squabbling minorities.

Because if we all speak different languages, than how do we make our needs know to another, how do we know what the policeman, our boss at work, the doctor or lawyer are saying to us. The country becomes fractured and weak we are just starting to see the effect of all of those that came here over the last 30 years and didn't bother to assimilate to our country to truly be an American and not a whatever American, Pres. T. Roosevelt said you are either American or you aren't you cant be Irish American but you can be an American of Irish heritage there is a difference.

It's not important for the immigrants to assimilate into American Culture without giving up their own.
I agree, all non English-speaking immigrants need to be able to read, understand and write in English, but they don't to give up their own culture to accomplish this.
Different Cultures are what makes America so great.

It really is not, I think the ones who don't know English should make the effort to try to learn it, but i know they work so hard and they don't have all the time. We just have to be patient. It takes a while. You can't tell them to assimilate now. Like I said, it will take quite a bit of time.

Well, there is an old saying,
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
Alienating the culture you live in is just a great way to make extra trouble for yourself-and life already provides plenty of that naturally-why take on more?

Because it is ultimately for their benefit! I work with a legal resident from Mexico, he has a printing business, he doesn't speak English?! I told him, he must learn English, he is losing so much business because he refuses to learn English....It makes good sense to learn the language of the country you are residing in, no?

Obviously you have never had a problem that required a phone call to a company or organization and could not understand the person assigned to you. Or tried to order a meal and can't make the person understand what you want. It totally pisses me off.

If they can't read & write & speak English very well it is a handicap that can affect them in interaction with other Americans that are not from their home country, their whole life.

Legal immigrants - so that they can get a head and not stay in the background of the community.
Illegal aliens? - no need since they will be leaving if our laws are ever enforced! They won't be getting amnesty!
