First, any amount of ibuprofen cause GI (stomach) bleeding; the example I like to give is the game Jenga--you can remove blocks--and any block can cause the tower to fall. It is just a lot less likely with the first few blocks. And the same with ibuprofen. Any amount could cause GI bleeding; but the amount of 400mg twice daily is more likely than not to be safe. The maximum daily dose for an adult is 800mg three times daily, so 400mg twice daily is probably very safe.

Any NSAID (non steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) can cause GI Bleeding. This is usually done over a long period of time. It works by disrupting prostaglandin and thrombroxane formation through the inhibition of an enzyme called COX. Unfortunately this also interrupts the bicarbonate levels in the stomach which prevent adaquete binding of the mucus in the stomach to the stomach lining.

Take it with some food and you'll be fine. Max dose of IBU at a single dose is 800mg, so you are far from it.

400 mg a day of ibuprofen is considered a low dose which can cause a very low incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. If you have an existing stomach ulcers, then it could possibly cause bleeding, but if none it is least likely thus you would be fine taking it. Keep a full stomach before taking it, that would be the best precaution you can do while taking it to relieve your pain. The dose to be taken should not exceed 1,200 mg per day.

Taking excessive amounts of ibuprofen can cause stomach bleeding. 400mg twice a day for a little while probably won't hurt you!

It's true, but the risks are small, and ibuprofen is the generally preferred choice for dental pain, and you aren't going to be taking it forever. All medical choices are a balance of risks and benefits.
