Free animals are never free. You will need food, shots, worming, litter box, toys and any additional vet care the kitten may need. They should not leave their mom until 8 weeks old.
Then you will need to have it fixed as early as the vet says to so it doesn't breed.
You would be better off going to the humane society and adopting a kitten there. They have had their shots, are usually microchipped, and are healthy.

As a responsible pet owner, I would never buy or take a "kitten," from a Walmart (omg) without immediately taking the poor thing to a vet for immediate medical attention.
And a reminder, as one Answer-er already said, there is no such thing as a "free" kitten, after a check up, vaccination, medication, food, toys, etc.
BEWARE OF FREE ANIMALS. This does not mean you shouldn't take them, but understand that often times, free animals come with many other free things, such as, but never limited too: Fleas, diseases due to inbreeding, may or may not have been abused, may have been taken from mother too early, medical problems due to malnutrition and dehydration.
If you SEE someone giving away free kittens at a Walmart, or any other store, do the right thing. Take them and hand them over to the Humane Society A.S.A.P if you can't afford to keep them.
You'll most likely be saving a life.

If you have your parents permission to get a kitten; check the want ads in your local newspaper there is nearly always someone with kittens to give away. Look under animals in the classified ads.
Remember kittens need to be cared for EVERY day and live for as long as 20 years so you MUST be prepared to take care of your new pet for a long, long time and not expect your parents or siblings to do it for you. Count the cost of food, litter, collars, Vet bills and the other Misc. needs before you get a pet, they are not cheap, but worth EVERY cent. Good luck.

There is no such thing as a free kitten, after vet bills, food, litter, toys, tags, replaced furniture carpet and shoes, even free animals can cost lots of money down the road. Having a companion animal is a very rewarding experience, but takes some financial commitment either way.

Look at the pet ads in the classified section of your newspaper. There are literally millions of kittens born in the US every year that don't have a home. And people trying to get rid of them advertise in the paper quite often.

Check the local newspapers. They typically have a lot in there... and be careful about giving your personal information over the web.
