I think they chose to use the rainbow to mock Christianity. I have seen Christians choose rainbows as a religious symbol also. The different colors have meanings. Here is a link with the meanings.

Edit:

* red - life
* orange - healing
* yellow - sunlight
* green - nature
* blue - serenity
* violet - spirit

Though I don't know why exactly, the gay community uses many references from the film WIZARD OF OZ to signify themselves. The rainbow and other parts of the film are used to identify themselves.

It COULD be a reference to the song "Somewhere over a rainbow." Certainly, someone around here who may or may NOT be GLBT would know the name for this song.

I imagine it has to do with the whole spectrum of human sexuality. Dr. Alfred Kinsey demonstrated that sexuality isn't a binary state -- either 100% straight or 100% gay -- but a whole range of attraction levels. And that they're all OK and normal.

Not too sure, but one thing I do know is that the color purple is for ROYALTY not gays like most people seem to believe. I, my sister-in-law, one of my cousins & several friends like the color purple & not one of us is gay. Maybe it's for the same reason they have the red ribbon for aids yet when first used it was for drugs.

I'm not sure why it is. I wish the symbol wasn't a rainbow though, because I love rainbows but I'm not gay :)

2007-06-25 06:41:02 · answer #9 · answered by Sonya 5 · 5 5

It's because rainbows are literally gay.

EDIT: The other people are saying stuff about diversity. I guess you could buy into that if you aren't willing to accept the obvious fact that rainbows are *gay*.
