The Ford Explorer is rated at 15 mpg city/21 highway. If you want to travel 40 miles in a Ford Explorer takes two or three gallons, depending on whether you are driving 40 miles in a city area, or 40 miles on open highway.

The national average for gasoline right now is $3.15 per gallon. Depending on where you live, you will be paying about $6.30 to $9.45 in fuel for your 40-mile trip.

No more than 20 miles on one gallon.

You're gonna need 2 gallons to go 40 miles, and it will cost you about $6

Most likely, you'll get between 13 and 14 mpg. So you are looking at 3 gal of gas and at 3 bucks a gallon, it looks like $12.00.
