You will need a passport to board an international flight. Sorry. If you didn't know, within the next year everyone will need passports just to visit Canada and Mexico. I do not see the relevance of having been born in the UK. You needed a passport to get in the U.S. You'll need a passport to go anywhere else.

Passport applications are at an all time high too. More than ever citizens are applying for them. This had made the wait time very long. The average time to receive your passport (without expediting) is about 12-14 weeks, possibly longer. Pay the extra 60 dollars and have the application expedited. It cuts it down to 1 or 2 weeks wait instead.

Good luck.

Just contact the Italian Consulate-General in Miami (better by e-mail or fax), attaching a copy of your old Italian passport, and they will explain you the steps of how to register with AIRE and get a new one. I disagree with GerdP, because the British are far more suspicious of alleged "citizens" that turn up at their doorsteps after four decades asking for their passport, because they allege that your ties with the ancestral land have weakened to the point that they could ask for additional proof (costly documents from the UK and sworn affidavits from members of the local British community, etc.) before considering issuing you a passport. And another thing: passport fees for Italian passports are roughly half than the fees for British ones...

You have the legal right to reside in the UK, but you will need a valid passport to get back into the UK, just as anyone else does.

I would apply for both UK and USA passports. You should be entitled to both and it will make travel back and forwards much easier.
