We have a portable DVD player that lasts a few hours before they get restless. I always bring books, as well. I am looking for some more creative ideas - ones that are not messy, inexpensive, and don't take up a lot of room!

a good idea also would be to wake them up extra early so that they will sleep part of the way. That will also give you some quiet time on the road. I know that my 4 year old likes video games, you might be able to get some portable inexpensive kid games. I know that there are some markers that only write on special paper, that would be fun for them.

Fisher Price Little People CDs (in the infant section at Walmart) we can spend and hour or two singing along with those and there are quite a few of them, each has its own theme.
Magna Doodle for them to draw on (there's a portable sized one that's about 6X8 inches)

Yea i no what you mean i have eight kids and they all share two dvd players in the car and they start fighting. We like to pack snacks and a cooler. But for fu nactivities we get window markers and cds. hope it helps

I-SPY works pretty well at that age...who can see a bird? Who can see a red car? Etc.
Kids love to sing..you may get irritated but sing-a-longs keep them happy.
Also, try to pull over every few hours and let them out of their car seats to run and play.

have them play car ride bingo.. they have these little boards that have the picture of things you see while on a car ride, such as a stop sign, and when you see one, you close the little window in front of that picture. you can probably make your own if you cant find them, but they should be at a lot of toy stores.
