If the crate is small enough (the dog has enough room to turn around, stand, sit, and lay down, but not pace), then the dog won't eliminate inside the crate. Take the dog out of the crate and right outside, and praise it a lot for eliminating out doors. Then back in the house and back in the crate. Eventually, expand the living area. If done properly, the dog will quickly learn to eliminate outside only.

Crate training isn't just to potty train. It helps to keep them safe like not chewing electric cords, etc. I have crate trained all 3 of my dogs. As old as they are they love their crates. I do not even close the door they go in and out when they want to. They like it because they like to have their own space. As a puppy, they do not like to go to the bathroom where they take naps. I am against dogs in crates all day and every day. Good luck and you decide if crate training is right for your dog.

The crate training theory is that puppies will keep their sleeping area clean. Choose a crate that is big enough for him to stretch out and stand in, but not so big that the puppy can do his business at one end of the crate and sleep in the other end.
The puppy will realize that he is not supposed to be peeing in his crate and will wait unitl his owner takes him outside to go potty.
That's the theory anyway.

The crate or kennel is their space or home and they don't go in their home. Let the puppy out at regular intervals (about when you think it should potty), then keep it out and play with it for a while after it has potties. Put it back in the kennel before you think it's that time again. Worked great me, and now she lets me know when she needs to go outside.

Crates are a valuable tool for many reasons...It helps make your pup feel secure, helps get rest and it helps housebreaking if you follow some simple rules: First crate needs to be small...do not buy one the size you think he will grow into....by small I mean just that...it should allow him to enter..turn around...and lie down...lying down should be the only comfortable position...which promotes sleep thru the secure feeling of the den closeness ....it will promote housebreaking by virtue of the no soil my space concept instilled by mom in the litter...later as he grows a larger crate is also useful...for many reasons....yet some rules apply : length of time needs careful thought....no more than 6 hours ever....3 hrs is fine....place it out of the sun..even in the house the sun can shine thru windows.....raise it off the floor if it is cold.....remove collars before crating...place in a low stress zone of the home....well you get the point right? common sense...housebreaking is another subject...Just want to add this...When to use a crate...anytime you or a family member can not directly supervise the pup...and by directly supervise I mean just that....never take your eyes off them....yes it takes work...

Yes - because it confines them to a small area. Dogs don't like to foul the place they sleep, so they learn to hold it. The key is to take them outside to eliminate as soon as removed from the crate and don't leave them in too long. Here's a good website on the subject.
